My husband has been told by some other Muslim men that he's praying wrong. Actually, it's just one Muslim man and he's not trustworthy. I kept telling him that he's doing it right but he'd like further advice from others. So, Muslims, can you please say exactly what to say in Arabic and how many Rakats for each prayer? My step sister told me it's "2, 4, 4, 3, 4". So please, help me out here. I may be knowledgable, but I'm no scholar.

Why the heck do we even pray 20 rakats of taraweeh salah? How about you learn how to talk respectfully? Your nick says " rightly guided".. do you think you are more guided than those who pray 20 rakats? ''I always used to pray 20 rakats with my muslim Sunni hanafi communiy in U.K. I was praying wrong all the time.'' You was praying all wrong? You just found a hadith and you didnt take a second to go to that conclusion? Everyone who prays 20 rakats are praying all wrong? Are you a scholar or something? Listen, your knowledge of Islam is " Limited". So, act like a student , not like a scholar. To answer your question, 1st get some basic knowledge of Islam.. learn the science of ahadith and fiqh. Second, Taraweeh does not have any fix rakats.You can pray 2 or even 100 if you want. But If you have so many complains about extended rakats then dont bother praying it at all.. nobody is forcing you.. very simple. ( and there wil be no sin on you if you dont pray it at all since it is not obligatory) Third, How many Rakats do I pray? It depends on the masjid , if i am in a masjid which offers 11 rakats, then i pray 11 with them. If the imam prays 20 then i pray 20 too. The reason is, we are supposed to follow the Imam of the masjid where we are at: ''If a man prays with the imaam until he finishes, it will be counted as if he prayed the whole night.'' ''Whoever stands with the imam until he finishes (the prayer), the reward of qiyaam al-layl will be recorded for him.” (Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 806; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi, 646).

2, 4, 4, 3, 4 are the necessary (Fard) prayers.

Besides those there are:
2 rakats before Fajr
4 rakats before Zuhr
2 rakats after Zuhr
2 rakats after Maghrib
2 rakats after Isha
These twelve are the Sunnah Mu'akkadah prayers, meaning the Prophet(peace be upon him) never used to leave them unless he had a good reason.
There is an authentic hadith saying he who prays 12 rakats sunnah (extra/not fard) in a day has such and such reward. I don't remember the exact wording.
And after the Isha sunnah, theres the Witr prayer, which is Wajib (mandatory), it can be any number of rakats, but an odd number. 1 rakat, or 3 rakats(2+1), or 5(2+2+1), etc.

Besides these there are other sunnah prayers he used to perform. I think island girl included all of those.

i will tell u the obligatory then i will tell you the sunna
in sequence:
fajr=2
zuhur=4
aser=4
maghrib=3
isha=4

sunna:
fajr=2 before the obligatory but it's a important sunna..the prophet said these rakats is better that the whole world

zuhur=4 before and 4 after

aser=no sunna and no prayer must be prayed after the aser till maghrib

maghrib=2 after

isha=two after or 3(2 shaf' and 2 watr)

now you gathered 12 sunna(volunteering) rakats..that means you have a palace in heaven...
congratulations!!

My understanding

Fajr - 2
Dhur - 4
Asr - 4
Maghrib - 3
Isha - 4

I am not exactly sure on how to write the Arabic as I've just memorized as I've been taught by other sisters. But there are many resources available on the net that show step by step and books available too. When in doubt I'd ask the Imam?

island girl!! are you including the sunna? As that is recommended but not required. The required number of rakat is 2,4,4,3,4

i am no scholar either but here goes my best shot some muslims pray different than others this is due to a difference in the opinions of past Scholars there are 4 main schools of thought also called madahib Hanafi, Shafi, Maliki, Hanbal they are all okay to follow but a person if he follows one madahib he has to pertain to all the other aspects of only that school of thought and not any other one

i know that is confusing

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madhab

that may help

as to the performance of prayer this is specific to each madhab

in hanafi
1. you start prayer with rasing the hands past the ears and say allahu-akbar
2. recite thana (subhana kul la huma............)
3. recite aoo tha billah ........... then bismillah .......
4. recite surah fatiha (alhamdullilahi rubil alamin..........)
5. recite an equvilent to three ayahs of the quran
6. go in to ruku after saying allahu-akbar
7. in ruku (bowing posture) you recite subhana rubee al atheem
8. you come up and say samiallah hu lee mun hamee da then rubanalakul hamd
9. you then go in to prostration sajdah saying allahu akbar
10. in sajdah you recite subhana rubee al ala
11. you then sit up from sajdah saying allahuakbar
12. you then make another sajdah
13. like this you pray the first two rakat then you sit after the 4th sajdah if praying more than two you will recite only atahee ya tu............... and get and pray the remaining rakat (s) or else you will end the prayer
14. to end the prayer after reciting atahee ya tu.........you will recite darood-e-ibrahim ( allahuma salee ala muhammud...... )
then you turn your head to your right shoulder and say asalamualykum wa rahmatullah then repeat the same turning to the left

about your question in the number of rakats in each salah

Fajr
2 sunnah then 2 Farth
Zuhur
4 sunnah then 4 Farth then 2 sunnah
Asr
4 Sunnah then 4 Farth
Magrib
3 Farth then 2 Sunnah
Isha
4 Sunnah then 4 Farth then 2 Sunnah then 3 Witr

sorry i kinda summed it up this is according to my madhab hanafi

i recommend you or your husband attach your self to a local scholar who has gone through studies concerning your school of thought

Good question sister, because imagine what happens if you get this wrong? I mean, imagine if you use the "3 5 5 3 2" sequence when the "2 4 4 3 4" sequence was really the right one? Ohhh, I wouldnt want to explain my mistake to Allah....nooo sir.
