FROM : http://www.wheaton.edu/isae/defining_evangelicalism.html
"Since 1976 the Gallup organization has been asking roughly 1,000 adults the question "Would you describe yourself as a 'born-again' or evangelical Christian?" In that first survey 34% of the people being surveyed responded "yes." Over the years, the number has fluctuated dramatically, reaching a low of 33% in 1987 and 1988 during the televangelist scandals, and a high of 47% in 1998."

I think that would be hard to accurately gage no matter what source you have so it would only be good within a certain percentage. Even the US Census doesn't ask that - it just asks for religion, for christianity denomination and other categories for people who aren't religious. Since Evangelicals can come in any denomination (my brother is one and he is presbyterian) then you couldn't get a completely accurate count.

I think wikipedia has a page with the combined populations of Alabama, Mississippi, Texas, and South Carolina.
That should get you pretty close.
