No matter what the recruiters tell you, you can and will go to war. They may also tell you that if you don't like it, you can quit. That is a lie. They are known to trick guys into joining with all kinds of promises, and -- let's face it -- most of the guys joining up are not that bright to begin with. There are smart ones, who just don't know what they want out of life, but the rest are there because they can't do anything else. Those are the ones the recruiters can lie to the most.
Even officers will go to war. Your best bet is air Force or Navy, and specialize in something that isn't related to the front lines, like Logistics.

You don't have any of those options. Your enlistment or commission allows the service to send you anywhere for the good of the country, and these days that often means Iraq or Afganistan.
Once you sign the contract you have to abide by what is says, but the military doesn't have to keep its end of the bargain. They are also allowing enlistments of people up to 50 years of age, who have "minor" criminal backgrounds, and are offering some foreigners a fast track to becoming a citizen, and they are adding even more extending "stop loss" time past the end of their enlistments. There are even some cases of extortion to make them re-up. This is sheer desperation to avoid a draft, because a draft is very politically unpopular.
Up until now they usually have honored their side of the contract -- however, the psychos that currently infest the White House are rapidly changing that - they will probably be sent to Iraq, before they let you out, and they can recall you at any time!
Prexy Dubya does "consult" with his commanders"on the ground", or "in the field", and even gives them the last word -"Yessir!"..

I like the old motto, "be all you can be". Go infantry, get airborne, air assault, sapper, and ranger training. Go to every soldier of the month board and rack up the AAM's. If you get a chance to choose, go 82nd Airborne at Fort Bragg, NC.
After 4 years of that, either go SF, or re-class to something that will help you when you get out after another 4 years. (you serve 8 despite what your contract says, thanks to stop loss). Thanks to your efforts in the first 4 years, you'll be an E-7 by then, and you might even be thinking you have a chance at CSM at a decent age, and decide to stay in.
That's what I wish I did. Instead, I got stuck in a support group where I didn't do my MOS, mowed a lot of grass, stood in a ton of retirement ceremonies, had a month long detail picking up trash (not as punishment either), and after 8 years of military, went to community college (because that's all I can afford with the GI Bill), and the best job I can get here is unloading trucks at UPS part time.
In summary, if you're going to join the military, make the best of it. Be all you can be.

The 82nd Airborne...for all the people wo say you cant pick your assignment, if you havent put your name on the dotted line yet...
The 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, provides the ability to begin executing a strategic airborne forcible entry into any area of the world within 18 hours of notification. The 82nd Airborne Division has had its share of famous soldiers from Sergeant Alvin C. York to General James M. Gavin. But that's not what the 82nd is really about. The real story of the 82nd is the thousands of unnamed paratroopers in jump boots, baggy pants and maroon berets, who have always been ready and willing to jump into danger and then drive on until the mission was accomplished.
As the largest parachute force in the free world, the 82nd Airborne Division is trained to deploy anywhere, at any time, to fight upon arrival and to win. From cook to computer operator, from infantryman or engineer, every soldier in the 82d is airborne qualified. Almost every piece of divisional combat equipment can be dropped by parachute onto the field of battle
The 82nd is currently deployed so unless you get there within a year you wont deploy.

If you want to join the military, you should chose a branch that suits you best and that you can serve best.
All officers in the active military have to have a college degree, but you can enlist in the military and apply for officer programs to get your degree.

Officers go to war just as, if not more than enlisted.
If you're afraid of war, don't join the military
If you're a conciensus objector, don't join the military

It doesn't matter which division, brigade, or battalion you join. You will get deployed. You civilians don't know anything. Officers are usually the commanders, epecially 2nd LT to Major. You will be leading these men to battle. If your going to be a officer, please don't because we don't need to chicken shyt leaders like you. You can be a West Point Grad or some rich 21 yr old from any accreditted college who took ROTC. You will be leading.

If you are concerned about the prospect of being sent to war, you have no business joining the military. That's why we have a military for crying out loud. Do us all a favor and forget about it. We need people who want to serve, not be served. Jeez.

It depends on what you want to do after the war. If it is something like the FBI, call them and ask them which branch.
In general, I would join the Air Force.
Their bases are better many are waterfront!
You can become a pilot or an astronaut
If you do become a pilot or aeronautical support, you can work in airports after the military.
