Well I am not in favor of sex in public view but I am open to a lot of unusual places.
The question is not so much as where is proper but really WHO is the proper person to make love with.
I mean the right person and the right time is essential. I will not settle for less.

In the dark at night, under 8 feet of blankets(in a barn) with the heat turned up to 50 or below...while all the doors and windows are open...

In the kitchen or on the sofa in the living room, in the basement on the futon, in the shower, in the bedroom - on the bed or on the floor. In the back of the SUV, on a cot in the middle of a field. In the laundry room, on the stairs. If you do it anywhere else than those places, it is a sin.

Where ever it doesn't break the local standards of decency and/or doesn't harm others.
In the car, when parked at lovers lane late at night, okay fine. In the car, when going along the highway next to a minivan full of kids, not okay.

The most fun and spontaneous is probably a tabletop.
Beds are classic, too.
On the beach is also nice, but bring a towel. Rolling around in the sand is not as romantic as it sounds.

To me, a bed. The floor isn't so comfy, the shower is really not fun, and I don't like sand getting in all my bodily crevices, so that's out! So, pretty much the only place left is bed!!

Anywhere.
There is no "proper" place to make love.
The beach. At night with the waves crashing and the moon lighting your bodies.
