How exactly did that get translated into a carpenter, rather than maybe a Rabbi? The word that was traslated into "carpenter" actually meant a "learned man" and gave no details on what particular field of work was involved. Who decided to make him a carpenter?

Jesus, if He existed at all as a single "real" human, was a Jewish Rabbi according to scripture.
But it is more likely He was a character created by His authors to teach "life lessons" to those the bible was read to.
Don't forget the New Testament was contemporary with Aesop's Fables. Stories that educated the masses on "morality" were as popular 2000 years ago as "American Idol" was just a few short months ago!

Rabbi means "learned-man or teacher". Jesus' "step-father" Joseph was always referred to as a carpenter. Since the son learns from the father and follows in his footsteps, then Jesus was labeled a carpenters son. The original word actually meant "a person that was hand skilled" and everyone just assumed that meant carpenter. Certain meanings of words get mixed up in translation. The same as Mary Magdeline being labeled as a prostitute. Neither is actually correct.

Carpenter . . . another example of why the King James Version is pretty poor.
Day laborer, is better . . . or craftsman.
But he did that for about 20 years, and then was a teacher, a Rabbi.
Rabbi's in those days wandered from town to town, teaching anyone who would listen to him . . .and so that's what Jesus did.

Where is your information?
I don't know if Jesus was learned as much as he was knowing. He showed wisdom above his years when he was 12 when dealing with the teachers.
