It is, in some minds, a put down of fundamentalists. A fundamentalist Christian is someone who holds to the basic fundamentals of the faith, and will not compromise on those fundamentals.

A fundie as used on Y/A answers is anyone who believes right from wrong is a black and white issue.
The Amish would be extreme fundies.
The rest of us "fundies" are told that if we will not change our basic beliefs and values, then we are extremists. Literally taking the bible word for word. This is not so, I am a Fundie, but I am not an extremist, those that use the term wish to force their beliefs, or lack of beliefs onto me and every other Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Jew, etc.
We are told that if we do not accept homosexuality, then we are intolerant and hateful. We are told that if we do not accept abortion as a normal thing, then we are against women's rights. Etc.

A fundamental Christian is one who uses the most basic interpretations in their understanding of Christ and his teachings. They see a lot of black and white rather than the grey that we who are more "politically correct" tend to see. Because their interpretation is more strict, some people see them as a threat rather than just another branch of the Christian tree. They aren't tolerated as well by those of us who claim to be more tolerant people (lol). Calling them a "fundie" is trying to insult them. True fundamentalists would "turn the other cheek" on insults and ignore it. I don't usually see very many fundamentalists on line here...but I do see the term bandied about quite a bit---almost exclusively in an incorrect manner.
I would assume that Sophie, at the top, truly IS a fundamentalist.

Everyone says it like it is a bad thing!!!
Being a Bible Believing Christian is a very high calling....
there are crack pots out there who have made idiots of themselves and in turn we were painted with their dirty paint brush...
Christians have little use for the artificial TV blow hard, the pew jumpers, the snake handlers....God is not a circus act and these people are just being clowns and embarrassing the faith...
The normal everyday Christian is the nicest person you know ....

Pharisee is a good name for them.
They think that:
1) The Bible is the inerrant word of God. ( typically the KJV)
2) Homosexuality voids anything that God could have done to save people. ( not a Biblical interpretation!)
3) That they tend to be more worried about homosexuals than they are spreading the Gospel, that if the person is homosexual the salvation of Christ isn't going to have an affect on them.
4) They want to focus on themselves so much on their own and each others lifestyle that they lose sight of God and the Author and Finisher of Faith: Jesus Christ.
5) They tend to have a Legalistic view of the Bible, and typically meld the message of James into the message of Paul.

A Fundamentalist Christian are those people who believe everything in the bible as the literal truth. They have thrown in a lot of extra made up stuff too, like the rapture and "born again".
A fundie is the first to spread hate, intolerance, and ignorance. I have 0, yes ZERO respect for 99% of them.

I believe it's a fundamentalist Christian. Usually hell fire, war monger (excuse that, I couldn't 'elp it), rapture, saved, well it's the popular notion of a Christian because there so vocal. Like Jerry Falwell or John Hagee. Add your own experiences.

Its a christians that has faith in Jesus Christ as there lord and savior and the bible as the only means of instruction on how to follow that faith correctly.

A fundie christian is someone who is very literal with the bible. they spend most of their lives trying to disprove anything that goes againts the bible, which explains why they are still around. because they keep failing.
