need to a few things to give you some help, need to know year also if its an earlyer truck if its an IDI,DIT IDIT engine.
also is if the smoke is white, blue, or black? Also if you have any other driveability issues like losing oil, poor fuel milage, better fuel milage then you should have and have been getting?

Is it black or blue smoke? Does the engine use much oil and if so, is the smoke blue? If so, the seals on the turbo may be leaking a bit. If high mileage, the valve stem seals could be leaking but usually that's more of a gasoline engine problem rather than a diesel. If it's blacksmoke, the injectors could be dribbling a bit. Better talk to a Ford mechanic.
