sunny is talking about REAL bbq, not grilling. at my hunting camp we have 2 old tractor trailer tire rims stacked on top of each other. i cut down some hickory trees and split the logs. we burn the hickory for about an hour then put a grill plate over the rims and cook over the red hot coals. the fat from the chicken drips onto the coals and the hickory smoke soaks into the cooking chicken. man, my mouth is watering just typing this in. nothing like hickory smoked bbq'd chicken and some cold ones to wash it down with.

one option ...

"Last summer a friend asked if I wanted a 50 gallon drum to make into a smoke/grill. Considering that it was free I couldn't say no. So we proceeded to cut out an opening, put some grates in there for the food and charcoal. Needless to say it was a halfa$$ed attempt at making a grill.

The only cutting we did was in the 'front'. We cut out a roughly 2'X1' rectangle for the door. The drum does have a hole, looks like it was for a cap or some such thing, not very big, bout 3" round, on the 'top'.

I've done it before. I used a 10 gallon drum, and cut it in half. But I must have spent $25 to buy a fire grate, food grate, a hinge, a handle, and legs. Check garage sales and flea markets. You can get used Webers pretty cheap. A Weber is painted with porcelain enamel and never rusts. Even it it's missing a grate, you can buy a replacement for $10. It will cost you a lot less than making your own.

I don't know where you are, but I'm in TX. We just go to the local walmart or home depot, buy one, bring it home and use it.
