Read aloud from Dr. Suess's "Green Eggs & Ham" until the policeman just goes away.

When you pull over, turn off your car, put both hands on the steering wheel and turn your interior lights on if it is dark. This helps puts cops at ease. Admit NOTHING to the officer (it will go in his report). If he asks how fast you were going, say you felt you were not exceeding safe limits, but you don't know the exact MPH you were at when he pulled you over. You BETTER know the posted speed limit of the street you were on at least, or that is an automatic ticket. Be polite and respectful. Comply with his requests without whining or sassing.

If you get a ticket anyway, you can submit a trial by written declaration to the court, which means that the officer will have to submit a written report as well. Cops hate extra paperwork, and there is a chance he will forget or let it slide. You will need to submit the bail (fine) when you mail your declaration, but if the cop does not submit his declaration, the bail is refunded to you and the citation dismissed.

If the cop DOES submit his report, you can request a "trial de novo", or a new trial, and go to court to fight your case. Again, if the cop does not show at the hearing, the case is dismissed and your bail refunded.

If the cop DOES show, at least you have a judge to listen to both sides, and you have a chance to prove you were not speeding. The details of that argument are up to you, but if you can show the officer was not as observant as he claims he was, or introduce doubt that the speeder was even you, the judge might dismiss the case.

Good luck!

There's no magic formula for getting out of a ticket because each cop and each situation is so different. But I'd say one caveat to go by during a traffic stop is never to lie to the cop or play dumb, BUT also don't clam up or make any self-incriminating statements either, which is a balancing act that requires quite a bit of diplomatic skills. Such as when the cop tries to trap you by asking the usual question "Sir/Maam, do you know how fast you were going?". It's best to give answers that are true and competent, but general in nature and not numerically specific such as: "I was traveling at the current speed of traffic in my lane" or "I was going at a speed that I considered reasonable and safe for the current weather and road conditions".

Be respectful and answer all the questions without attitude and 9 out of 10 times you'll get a warning.

Also as the answer before me states you can go to trial. Only problem is now many departments are getting into the 21st century and using systems that share information outside of the basic number of convictions. All my cases now are posted along with the conviction and case information, that way we know if the person has been using the trail de novo and can already forward the information to the court. Many municipalities have gotten tired of repeat offenders getting off the hook by using a system created for those that can't afford to make the trip.

Drive the speed limit and don't get pulled over in the first place.

It depends. SOMETIMES you can plead to a lesser violation - like no seatbelt. Not all cops are willing to let you plead down though. Some are so gung-ho on writing a speeding ticket.

Otherwise, you're SOL. Don't speed. Use your cruise control if you have it.

traffic cops spend all of their time in a car so the one thing they can relate to is an urgent need to use the bathroom. when the officer comes up to your window apologize profusely and tell him you are about to burst, and act like it. my brother in law is a cop and when he and my sister were still dating he told me this trick and i swear to you i have used it successfully three times. make sure you ask the officer if he knows where the closest bathroom is. and i suppose if you are desperate enough and have too many points on your license already you could piss yourself.

Do not speed. Other than that, Be sure to be as disrespectful as possible. When they approach your car, be sure to rev the engine a few times. Swear at the officer, tell them they are wrong and make sure you throw in 'pig' a couple of times for good measure.
