Why is it that many theists think atheists are devil worshipers?

I don't get it. I was talking to someone yesterday and the look on her face when I said atheist, you would have thought I killed her parents.
I do not beleive in any supernatural being (good, bad or ugly).

It's because they've been trained to think that their religion is the sole source of morality. Therefore, people of other religions have an inferior morality, and atheists have none at all.

In reality, atheists are more moral than religious people, because they actually think about why something is moral or not instead of just being fed a list of rules.

Well religion does provide a good moral system. But there are other ways of teaching morals that work.

Inside the church you are taught to follow the ten commandments (I'm speaking of Catholicism... I don't have experience with any other religions o_o) and to the golden rule (the one in all religions: do unto others as you would have done onto you.Something like that). I guess, because that's the way they learn it, they think that there is no other way. Some of them might think that because you do not follow the rules of their God, you do not know morals and believe that since there is no final judgment you feel you don't have to act in a way that is moral, or you were never taught to.

This is just a guess. Since I don't actually follow any religion I can't speak for all of the people out there that do. But I know quite a few people that are deeply religious so this is my hypothesis. And yes, the majority of those people are really really nice. But some are kinda hypocrites (some of my great aunts O.O!!!!!!) where they will act terrible all week but on Sunday just... well TRANSFORM almost for one day into model citizens for church. Not good.

I know what you're talking about. Some of my families closest friends are deeply religious, and were shocked to find out that my mom is an atheist because she has such a good sense of morals. (personally I'm neither an atheist or a theist... I believe that there is something but I don't think it is a definite all powerful being that lives in the sky.)

They think that atheists are devil worshipers because they are extremely close-minded and improperly educated on the subject. It's absolutely absurd because if we don't believe in God or any other Deity, we wouldn't believe in Satan. And a lot of the time they think that because we don't believe in a Heaven, that we go around murdering people and commiting crimes and etc, but we DON'T. We don't need a book to tell us what's right and wrong, and just because we don't get a big payoff at the end, doesn't mean that we won't still be good people. But I digress :]

Because you choose to live separately from God and choose everything else (& yourself) but him, you may get some responses like that. It is hard to understand why people choose the way they do. Even when we choose a path that we think is good or fun does not mean that it is right thing to do. I have you in my prayer tonight.
