Who win this race between Triple Crown winners?

I think you have to give Secretariat the edge, at any distance. He had better times than Seattle Slew in all three Triple Crown races, and was five seconds faster in the Belmont despite not having anyone to push him at all in the last half mile.

Slew was a great horse, like any other Triple Crown winner. Secretariat, though, is considered one of the greatest athletes of the past 40 years - he's transcended being a horse in the culture of sports.

I got into horse racing at the time Seattle Slew was racing and I was amazed at this horses very competitive nature. I was an athlete and recognized that will to win in her immediately. Not that you have to be an athlete to recognize this trait. I haven't seen it since at that level. Having said this I would have to say Secretariet would win a match between the two if it could happen. Secretariet had much to much speed to be denied. Her races were unbelieveable to see on film. I only wish I could have seen them live in person. That must have been awesome to witness. Good question by the way.

Secretariat would win easily even though Slew was a great horse. He could come from last to first or take an early lead and stay there. When he was right no horse could beat him.According to historians only Man o' War compares favorably to him.Remember he still holds the stakes records for the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes as well as the track records at Belmont park for a mile and a half and a mile and an eighth, all as a 3 yr old!

Oooh, that would be a race! Slew was a gutsy, gritty horse who just didn't like to give up, as you can see in the 1978 Jockey Club Gold Cup: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZFr6N2lNY4

Slew was always a "hot" horse, and in the JC Gold Cup he was so wired he broke through the gate. After that, it was a foregone conclusion that he'd be on the lead. And so he was, all through the race, until Exceller headed him in mid-stretch.

When Exceller passed Slew by, you'd swear that Slew was done and was going to be beaten by open daylight. But sheer competitive fire got him going again, and he was gaining on Exceller with every stride as they came to the wire. One or two jumps past the wire, and Slew would have beaten Exceller.

Secretariat, on the other hand, was lightning in a bottle. He just outclassed and outran his opponents. For sheer running talent, it's pretty hard to envision another horse of modern times who was a better runner.

I think that in a hypothetical race at 1-1/4 miles on a dirt track, Secretariat would outrun Slew and beat him-- but not by much. I think Slew would be grinding away at Secretariat all through the stretch.

It would sure as heck be a race for the ages. Who knows, maybe it would be head-bobs down to the wire, and the camera not able to separate them in a dead heat. That would be the fitting end to such a race.

I believe Secretariat would have won, because he did have faster times than Slew in all his Triple Crown races.

Secretariat, the greatest athlete ever, would win this race easily. On an off day, Secretariat could, and did, lose, but in his prime, no horse could have beat Secretariat.
