Here is the correct answer:

A drivers license check will only show your currant license information and if your license is valid. It will also check you for wants or warrants in state and federal data bases.

A license plate / tag check will only show your currant plate and vehicle information. It will also check the tag / vehicle for wants or stolen in state and federal data bases.

If the agency has the hardware and software, it will also show any contact you have had with the police in that agency.

In Florida, I can also, from my car, access your driving record from my car computer, but it is a different data base then the routine license check.

If you want to get a Criminal History Report (your official FBI / NCIC criminal record of every arrest in the country) then that has to go through a special terminal with in the agency. Criminal History Reports are not, by law, to be run as part of a routine traffic stop.

Depending on what kind of history check we run, anything and everything. How many times you have been pulled over and the result. Any arrests, and certainly any convictions, any warrants. It is nice to know what we are walking into.

but we are generally not allowed to check your criminal history during a traffic stop

When they run your license they only get your driver's license information and wants or warrants. I can tell you in NJ, on a routine traffic stop, the police aren't even allowed to get your driver's history (which lists your traffic offenses).

In order to get your criminal history, dispatch has to run a completely different inquiry.
