I believe saying "in my humble opinion" is a disclaimer for people who would otherwise take your opinion for criticism rather than a simple opinion. It just takes some of the seriousness out of your perspective, as to not offend anyone.

Humble meaning- you are saying "I don't know everything, my statement may be imperfect- but this is what I think of this issue"

I suppose we say that knowing that we can't possibly be experts on every situation for which we draw an opinion. Perhaps we want to share what we think while still realizing that we stand a great chance of being wrong or disagreed with. I feel we say this more for the benefit of those we are speaking to than just to ourselves. We want them to know that we are ok with them disagreeing with our opinion due to the fact that we recognize our lack of expertise from the onset. We are humbled by the fact that we realize there are those around us that will definitely know so much more than we do even though we feel confident enough to voice our thoughts. Now remember...... this is merely my humble opinion. ;)

We say "in my humble opinion" to be polite, to avoid people from thinking we are bragging about our knowledge. Even when we're talking about something we are expert in. After all, we are just human beings, we all make mistakes.

My opinion isn't humble, and neither is anyone else's. If a person was truly humble about their opinion, they would never give it.

We give our opinions (especially on YA) because we believe we are right. There's no room for humility in that.

Here's an example of my non-humble opinion: Etiquette is another word for "scared to do anything wrong". While we need good manners, we do not need etiquette.

Because I do not make any high claims of objective truth or superiority for it. It's just my opinion, and others are free to disagree.

Because it's just a personal opinion expressed - we're not expecting you to take it as gospel, or think we're trying to tell you what to do.

Because it's mine and I'm not going to try to ram it down anyone's throat. It's like leaving cookies for Santa....there they are...take them or leave them, but they're there if you want them...lol

When I offer my opinion it is just that my opinion. You may accept it or not, no big deal.
