We figure someone else will do it. That we lack the necessary skills to do God's work. What we seem to forget though is that God is mighty and wise in all things and can use us to do great things should we choose to trust in him. Also, we don't want to be inconvenienced from our own worldly concerns. We forget again that God is good and that He can deal with any troubles we may have. Far better then we ever could.
God bless.
Thanks for the wake up call!

Here are some even better questions:
1) Why would an all-powerful God, with armies of angels, need or want you to 'serve' him? Is this supposed God just some massive control-freak that won't be satisfied until everything in existence is jumping at his every little whim? Why would anyone worship a psycho like that?
2) Why would you believe that there is some God that wants you to serve him when there is no evidence that it exists? Why would you want to waste all of your time and energy "serving" something that probably isn't even there?
If you really feel the need to "serve" something, you can always come over and do my laundry. However, if you use too much starch, I'll be forced to send you to Hell.

It is optional because the bible is a book of stories. god doesn't exist. The scientologists follow a book too, do you follow what it says? No, because you KNOW that it is a stupid thing to believe in.
I am an atheist and I serve humanity, not because of fear of retribution(hell) or hope of reward(heaven), but because it is the human thing to do. You don't have to worship something or go somewhere once a week to be a good person.

Why do you atheists have to always use questions like this as an attack against the belief in God? If you don't believe in Him, don't answer questions that are directed towards the people who do!

Because there's no "God", and the Bible is largely false.
No-one needs an "excuse" not to serve god. I mean, what's your excuse for not serving invisible pink unicorns or the Flying Spaghetti Monster?

Because they are fiction. So, serving god isn't optional -- it is impossible.

Because we don't all believe in the credibility of the bible. Some of us have faith in ourselves instead of placing it all on a mythical entity.
