NO I don't think anyone should have to join. I feel that if someone is made to join and they don't really want to be there it could harm the ones that want to serve their country! Again just a personal opinion but I don't want someone who doesn't want to be there serving next to my husband who made the choice to serve....

No. Only 15% of American males between 18 and 35 years of age can meet the physical, psychological and moral standards for enlistment or appointment. And, if you check some of the military-related questions asked on this web site by those in that age group, you will quickly realize that they should never be allowed near folks with a sense of discipline who are heavily armed. The military is not a social services correction program. That sort of nonsense was attempted during the Vietnam Era with such palpably nonsensical things like "Project 100,000", where functional illiterates wound up in the ranks, along with criminal miscreants and those with severe emotional problems.

No.
The military is too important to waste their time on people that don't want to be part of it. There's a lot more to being a soldier than wearing a uniform and standing up straight, and if a person simply lacks the desire, it's just more trouble than it's worth to teach them.
I don't even think the military should take everyone that wants to go. Some folks simply don't have anything the military needs.

no way. I would never ever ever join the military. I love our country but i have no intentions of being in the military. I think it takes a special person to be in the military and i am not that person. Honestly i would go to jail before join the military. I am to old for draft now but if they had one when i was of age i would not of gone. i am just not a military person i can support the country in another way

I agree with open4one entirely - that's why they scrapped National Service here as it was distracting the Army from their real purpose.
However I think that all young men *and women* should do at least a year's form of service at that age (and complete it before they can go to college and so on) - those who *want* to do military service would be welcome to choose that option - the others should do voluntary work in hospitals, building children's playgrounds, helping the elderly (under supervision) and so on.
In France I think that military service was one year and those who chose non-military service did two - which seems fair.
I would not send *under*-eighteens into combat zones like some have been here but that's just my opinion.

Today global capitalism among the world superpowers rules out any necessity for a large defense force. World wars are a thing of the past. The only reason major countries employ these forces today is to capture smaller countries for economic imperialism. War is about economics today, just look at our military industrial complex today. I recommend seeing the 2005 Sony Pictures documentary titled "Why We Fight".
In a free society, nobody should be forced to fight in a war to make other people wealthy. If you want to sign up for this cause, thats an individual choice that has to be made.

I think it might be a good idea, but it can be a choice between two obligation like in germany and mexico that you have to give your civil service you either join the military for 1 year or something like that or do a special service like at a hospital or government office.

No, not at all, I don't think someone should be forced to serve when they don't want to. Some people have a desire to want to fight in war, so they are the ones that are in the army. Plus, If every 18 yr old male was in the army, then none would go to college, and that wouldn't be good.

Number one, there would be 1000s of guys skipping out on their part and the government would not have enough man power to find them. 2 not all men are suitable for the services. 3 and 90% of these guys would go in there, try to survive, and wouldnt be much of a defender. 3 the services are doing a fine job by me the way they have been doing it for the past 10 years.

No. My son entered the USMC at the age of 17. After graduating high school. He will be home in 28 days. This is is his second tour. He is trained now to be anything he wants to be. FBI, CIA,. So many options. I am so proud. He has so many goals. But the draft went out so long ago it . I wonder where this question derived from. A liberal? maybe.
