My son has had his for over two years and hasn't had any problems. It's convenient for blood draws and scans. It really depends on how long a patient is in treatment and what plans are in place (such as harvesting blood stem cells for transplant), Once treatment stops than the port can be removed. Or if there is any type of infection they will also remove the port. The port will stay in place as long as it is needed.

my port sometimes hurts if laid on or bumped. I asked the surgeon if they remove the ports and i was told not unless there are complications. best thing to do is to ask your surgeon if you are having problems and they can advise you on what should be done.
