When people go on trial, they are asked to put a hand on the bible and swear to tell the truth.

As a Wiccan, Swearing on the bible doesn't really wouldn't do any thing to me.. So... What would Pagans do in that situation?

And no Im not due in court. Not now, and hopefully never! I actually have not paid attention to any court cases, law shows, or any thing like that. But I remember when I was younger thats how they did it. My fiance's mother was talking about some court case and the question just popped into my head so I figured I would ask!

I didnt realize so many people would think that I was going to court. I would tell the truth, no matter what. I was just curious. I would have no reason to lie.

It's no longer required to swear upon a bible in court. You take an oath instead.

That's so Hollywood... and so out of date!!!

I was in court back in 2000 (divorce) and was simply asked to swear to give truthful testimony. No Bibles were involved.

The issue came up, politically, when the first muslim was elected to the US House of Representatives last year (see link).

So....Did ya watch an old movie where someone did that and it got you all bothered? Well, rest assured you needn't worry. They no longer swear on the bible as others before me have said. I just have to ask.... Are you due in court soon, and you were hoping for some kind of loophole, so you wouldn't have to tell the truth?

Quakers and many other sects and religions have this problem too because 'swearing' and 'taking oaths' is forbidden (and that doesn't mean profane language).

Quakers believe that they are committed, anyway, to tell the truth at all times, so they simply affirm that they are telling the truth. This is allowable in Law. I believe that the same would apply to pagans.

There are many non-religious alternative to the swearing on the Bible bit. In fact, many states now just ask you to swear to tell the truth, period.

Most proceedings don't use bible swearing anymore, it's more like an affirmation of truth.

Comedy option: Filibuster and list off every single god and goddess you can think of to help you. Take a notebook if you can't remember them all.

Does it matter? As a Pagan you have a high moral standard already so why worry.

If you say something, anything, and it hasn't happened yet it should still come to pass. Wiccans don't lie so that their words become power.

You do not need to swear on a bible. You would just swear to tell the truth.

Good question. You could probably go with the flow and say yes. If you say you are a Wicca, some people on the jury may not give your testimony any credence or the other side could throw out your testimony. You know how some people are.

Non-Christians go to court every day. There's an option to "affirm" rather than to swear. There are also some Christian groups whose members refuse to swear oaths, and they also choose to affirm.
