Recently i've started crunching/chewing ice. Whenever i get a drink with ice in it i have to chew a few cubes. I know this is really bad for your teeth so im trying to stop but nothing else (like gum) is like the ice. I dont know why i do it so im lookin for some help or suggestions Thanks!

Pat: My 13-year-old daughter loves to chew ice. Does that mean she has a vitamin deficiency?

Dr. Dean: Chewing ice is called pagophasia, and anyone who does it really should have their blood iron checked. It can be a symptom of iron deficiency anemia.

I got an email the other day from a woman who is an ice chewer, and she said even though her blood iron was close to normal, the craving for ice-chewing went away after she took an iron supplement.

Contrary to a few other posters- Ice can be very bad for teeth. Your tooth enamel is a crystalline substance and so is ice. When two crystals meet- one has to give, and eventually it could be your tooth. Try chewing on something hard like nuts or hard chocolate. If all else fails, suck on the ice or ask for no ice.

My husband's aunt told me that every time you chew ice, it makes cracks in your teeth that won't show up for years. She is a dental assistant, so she should know. I picture the money and the pain chewing ice will cause when I can't resist the urge to crunch the ice.

What you can do is avoid the ice altogether - when you get a drink at a restaurant the drink itself is usually pretty cold anyways.

Or you can try sucking on the ice instead of chewing it or crunching it. That's what I usually do.

a lot of prenant people crave ice. just kidding!
i work at a dental office, i've seen a lot of people get crowns on their teeth from ice chewing. but there are a lot of things your dentist would advise against that most people do daily. if you have to do it, maybe put some ice in a cup and let it set out for a little bit and melt some. but if you think you've cracked one of your teeth from it go get an appointment!

Chewing ice indicates an iron deficiency. Try eating foods that are rich in iron, such as raisins, prunes, leafy green veggies and meats.

as long as you arent' chopping down so hard it breaks your teeth then there is nothing wrong with it. why not try the crushed ice. any way you can hydrate your body is a good thing. so don't stop crunching just crunch smaller pieces.

I don't know if it is true or not, but someone told me that if you chew ice it means you have an iron deficiency.
