The Psalms are located in the middle of your Bible. Most of them are poems and many are songs. The Psalms range from glorifying God to whining and complaining to him. They were written by David, who went from shepherd boy to prophet to king, and had good days and bad.

Good luck with your reading! I would also start reading the Gospels... just take them 1 chapter a day!

Oh, always start your reading time with a prayer, asking God and the Holy Spirit for guidance and understanding as you read. I have found that it really helps!

Psalm 83:18

Psalm = Book of the Bible
83 = Chapter
18 = Verse

The colon separates the chapter and the verse. The chapter is always on the left side of the colon and the verse is on the right.

Psalm 37:9-11, 28, 29

Psalm =Book of the Bible
37= Chapter in Psalms
9-11, 28, 29= verses 9 through 11, and also verse 28 and verse 29

Here's a more complicated one:

Psalm 1:1, 2; 19:7

Notices that Psalm 1:1, 2 and 19:7 are separated by a semi-colon. This means that 1:1, 2 and 19:7 are located in the same book of the Bible.

Psalm 2:2; Acts 4:26

Psalm 2:2 and Acts 4:26 are separated by a semi-clon. Often when this happens, the two scriptures are meant to be compared.

Hope this starts you off!

Psalms are pretty much right in the middle. between Job and proverbs.

As for how to read them, that's a HUGE question! remember there are different types of writing in the Bible, Psalms are poetic. They are poems written to worship God. Some are uplifting and encouraging, some are cries of anguish. You'll find the whole range of emotions cried out to God. I strongly recommend finding an easy to read translation like The Message which can really make things a lot more accessable.
Ohter than that, say a quick prayer, open up your bible and pick a psalm. Try starting with a short one, read it to yourself, then read it again out loud, stop, think on it, read it more. reflect on the words.
As I said, this is a HUGE question and many books have been written about it so if you have questions don't be afraid to ask. seek out someone to help and guide you. keep seeking, keep praying and best wishes.

All Bibles have an index in the front that tells you which page each book starts on.

The Bible is comprised of 66 books, although one theme runs throughout. It is the story of mankind's fall from God's grace and our redemption through Christ's atoning work on Calvary. It is not at all difficult to understand, as some would have you think. Just please do not involve yourself in any of the cults (i.e. Jehovah's Witnesses, etc.) who will tell you they have all the answers and then put a spin on it so that they can twist Scripture to back-up their man-made doctrines.

Here's the best advice anyone can offer you:
1. Pray that God's Holy Spirit will open up your understanding as you read.
2. Start at the beginning and read straight through the entire Bible, reading a couple of chapters each day. That is the only way you get a good grasp on the continuous theme throughout.
3. Get yourself a good study Bible with cross references and footnotes that will help you to understand some of the more difficult passages. Be careful which study Bible you choose, though, not all scholars are as reputable as others. I recommend highly the Schofield Reference Edition of the KJV, but if you have trouble understanding the old English, I'm not sure if they have it in the New KJV version. If not, maybe use it in conjunction with an easier to understand version such as the American Standard or Good News Bible. But use Schofield's cross-references and footnotes.
4. Don't be afraid to ask questions of MATURE christians at church who are well-scholared. The pastor, his wife, or the elders of the church are usually the best ones, but not necessarily exclusively.

God Bless!

The best place to start is to read the New Testament. Read it through at least two or three times before you go the O.T. The Psalms are great! They are right about in the middle of the Bible (part of the Old Testament). You will find yourself getting caught up in the prayers, laments, and praise of the writers. I have read through the Psalms more times than I can count. I think you probably will too. God bless!

Start reading the Bible with the Gospel of Luke, or John.

Psalms are dead center of your Bible. Start with Psalm 117. The shortest.

Understand there are different types of Psalms -- these are the prayers the ancient Jewish people used. Psalms - or prayers - of lament, of praise, of sadness. Different Psalms representing different feelings.

Read Psalm 22 -- the first line is the line Jesus prayed as he died -- and read to see how the author is lamenting, or complaining to God, and then look for the word BUT, and see how the tone changes.

Look for BUT in most of the lament Psalms. . . the Psalms of complaint.

Godspeed.

A new believer in Christ should start off reading, studying, meditating and applying the books of the New Testament. First start with the four gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The gospels are base on the Birth, Ministry, Death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Reading the book of John will help you in your relationship with Christ. If you have a King James Version (KLV) it might be a little hard to understand - so try New International Version Bible. The words will be easy to understand. To the find the books of the bible look in the front of the bible for the contents under the New Testament books their listed in order. Always pray before you read the word to ask the Holy Spirit to help you to understand God's word. The church that you attend make sure to go to bible study and be around other believers to strenghten your new found faith in Christ. God bless!

Start with the new testament, Matthew.

Many times during your reading of the new testament, it will let you know that certain words or ideas were taken from the old testament and where to find them.

Psalms is in the old testament, and not really the best "first reader" It is a wonderful collection of poetry, mostly from King David, but if you do not have a back ground of what he was experiencing during the writing of the different psalms, you might get a bit confused.

When reading the new testament, try looking up the old testament references that are used. this will help you start tying the whole thing together as you grow and learn.

The Bible was recorded because it benefits us. It is meant for us to apply it.(Isa. 48:17,18) Throughout the Bible it is clear that Christ would have true followers and that would be evident in the good works or fruit that they would bare.( Mat.7:13-23) These persons would not be having some sort of "religious experience."Rather, they would be in action! In general, Applying God's word in their own life. And obeying Christ's command to preach and teach. Doing this successfully.(Mat.24:14) These persons are aware of the impending destruction spoken of in God's word.-2 Pet 2:5-7. P.S. You should be able to find the book you want on the table of contents or the index.
