Madam Tussaud's Wax Museum - all ages will enjoy. It is amazing how lifelike some of the statues are. Some of them look like they are about to turn and talk to you. A visit takes 2-4 hours depending on how much time you spend looking.
Hubby and I are in the area make frequent trips to NYC and we and my 3 sisters all enjoyed it. It is right off Broadway in Times Square too, which I'm sure you'll visit too.
You can see everyone from Oprah to Fred Astaire here. And I think they are doing a special Pirates of the Carribean exhibit right now too.
Another insider's tip - Radio City Music Hall is shabby and overrated - if you want to see a show stick to Broadway.
Enjoy!

Since you have 8 months to plan, I would recommend that you go to your local library, check out some travel guides to NYC, read various recommendations, and decide for yourselves what sounds interesting to you.
You can also Google "New York" with phrases like "Walking Tour" to find tons of pages of things that you might like/hate seeing when you are there.
A lot of the cultural things -- plays, musicals, museum exhibits, etc. will change between now and then, so any recommendations of that type would be dated anyway.
