White will mix with pretty much anything.
The rest tends to be personal preference, but here are a couple of pointers:
Keep the ceiling and the trim white to pull in the white of your porcelain and to keep the room open.
Try to stick with a light, pleasant wall color.
My personal preference are the warm tones, so a light (not bright, more creamy) yellow, beige or green might go nice.
Then for added drama, try to pick one wall for an accent.
Paint it in either a really dark shade of the light color (again - more desaturated, no scream colors) or a slightly different color. Some nice combos would be: Cream with a Dark Navy, brown or dark Sage accent wall, subtle yellow with a dark sun yellow or even a dark brick red accent or a light sage with a dark Sage or a brown accent wall.
It doesn't have to be an accent wall either - it can just be color accents in the room, like towels or a shower curtain.
As a general rule of thumb: Even if you love bright colors, try to keep the brightest ones in your accents and off your walls. Especially if you're planning on selling in a couple of years.
It's much easier to change decoration when the wall color is more sedated. You can for example throw bright red accents into any of the combos listed above and it'll still work.
A couple more tips for an expensive looking bathroom on a budget:
When you get tile, you can buy what's on sale, but invest a little extra when picking your grout: pick a tone that shows up in your tiles, never something much lighter or darker. It can make your tiles look cheap. Also - if you're laying them yourself, try a diamond pattern instead of just laying them straight. It's more work (much more work), but it will make the cheapest tiles look like a million bucks. If you're really adventurous, try laying a border straight, then the middle diagonally.
Other than that - never buy something just because it's the cheapest. Doesn't matter whether it's tile, a light fixture, shower curtain or something else. Buy what you like and can afford. Also - splurge a little on the accessories.
Your tiles may be cheap, but budget a bit for a trip to Pier One and Bed Bath and Beyond.
I just recently renovated a little bathroom. Got an old clawfoot tub on ebay for eighty bucks, got a home depot sink and toilet and tiles for $1.20 a square foot.
We painted the walls in a cream with a dark, gray-green accent wall, laid the cream colored tiles in a diamond pattern with cream colored grout. Then I splurged on a great shower curtain that's got all those colors in it and some really beautiful silk flowers, soap dispenser etc.
I wound up spending about $300 on accessories, but saved about $2000 on my main materials. And wound up with a bathroom that looks like it's been done by a professional designer. In the end, decking out the bathroom with all new accessories is the most satisfying part of the renovation - and the part that will make all the difference.
Good luck with your project!

My bath and all the walls are white. I'v done mine with stripped floorboards, a dark wooden door matching bath panel and t&g ceiling, a wooden slatted blind and Ikea pink curtains. Plus some Laura Ashley style soap and cream dispensers. With pale powdery green fluffy towels and bath mat. The room is tiny but it looks good and feels cozy.

Have a small tile mural created for your backsplash in the bathroom and then coordinate colors to this dramatic focal point... Surprise--- Low cost too!

With white you can do no wrong.
Pick one color like turquoise or brown. Decide whether you like gold or silver fixtures. Silver with blues or gold with browns.
Use shells or candles or plants to liven up the space.
Enjoy.

1] get a pretty shower curtain in colors you like
2] paint the walls the color you like most
3] buy floor mat/rug, trash can, in the darkest color
4] get tumbler, soap dish, toothbrush holder in wall color, or another curtain color
5] add a short, fat candle
6] a small plant on counter, tank, or hanging
7] get towel sets in wall, floor, and other curtain colors
PS: could try using 'no color', and adding gold/brown accessories or black/silver accessories.
