My pc will not pick up any of 3 dv cameras. I have tried them on 2 other brand new pcs and still no success. I think the ports on all three must be damaged. How easy is it for the firewire ports on a camcorder to burn out?

is there a reasonably priced portable mini DV cassette player that can be purchased to upload video onto pc?

Yes the computer did auto detect before.

I have done some searches and concluded that this same common problem is due to the firewire chips on all three cameras being damaged by voltage from the pc. I need to buy a new camera to upload tape.

The odds of 3 different firewire outputs being bad are probably 1,000,000:1. My guess is that your PCs are not recognizing the input. Make sure that you've selected the correct input in your software. And, to my knowledge, there are no mini DV players on the market that are reasonably priced. Panasonic or JVC makes a dual mini DV - SVHS deck that sells for around $800, but I wouldn't put the money into something like that if you only need to transfer to PC.

you don't mention what video program you are using on the PCs. firewire is not "auto detect", just because you are sending digital video, your computer screen won't pop up a display of it. this requires capture software. and you are talking playback of a tape right, not trying to use the camcorder as some kind of webcam?
