I was one of the earliest members of 'The Brights' (no 99), and I hated the name back then.

The idea was to come up with a positive name that atheists would find easier to identify, on the grounds that 'atheist' had negative connotations. I thought that was stupid, and that making 'atheist' acceptable was a far more sensible way to go.

Back in those days, there was actually quite a bit of snickering about 'we all know what the opposite of 'bright' is, don't we', which sounded tacky.

Even today, with bazillions of members, the Brights in general still hate the name, and want to change it. They'd prefer to be Atheists, instead. But the Brights central HQ is still trying hard to push the word. I fear that the founders of the organisation are ironically not very bright themselves at all.

Well, the Brights are doing a few good things - though it seems to take them a year to blow their noses. There are other, better atheist organisations, though, and I recommend them.

Funny, I had a long discussion with a woman that basically said "You're too smart to be a Christian" I asked her, "Does that mean you're dumb? " She was totally flummoxed by the whole conversation.

I don't think theists are dimwitted, they just have a different set of experiences to base their beliefs upon. Because atheists or people without a particular religion don't have those same experiences doesn't make them any smarter, though occasionally a believer's blind faith certainly makes it seem that way.

Strangely enough, dear boy, the brights call theists "supers" -- a bright being someone with a "naturalistic" worldview, as opposed to a "supernaturalistic" one. Doesn't sound pejorative at all.

And I hate the name "bright" as well.

I think using bright for atheist is as stupid as using theist when you mean Christians or monotheists.

As a generalization it could. On a person by person basis it is just an observation about one person.
