I am with the crowd. While I run Vista, I very much discourage upgrading to novice computer users until more software works well on it.

If you go with Vista, the 32 bit Premium edition is the best version. I like its email program better than Outlook Express, but I like Outlook 2003 better than Vista Mail. The basic version is missing too many features and the Ultimate edition is quite a waste of money unless you like the free poker program it provides.

A lot of people are confused by Office applications in Vista. They work fine. The cheaper versions of Office don't work well. But, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, et al can be loaded from 2003 and there are no issues. I use the Student Teacher edition of 2003 with no issues.

Games is where Vista really suffers. My games run 10-20% slower accross the board.

Good luck.

The security of Vista is a lot nicer, but it is very confusing for people new to computers.

I bought a Compaq laptop with Vista already installed and I totally hate this program! I had to retype all of my old MS Word files because they aren't compatible - Vista uses MS Works Word Processor which has so much less options. I can't send attachments to most people since they are still using XP or earlier. I have Word but only 25 free uses of it then I have to buy a $150 package for full use!

Until Microsoft figures a way to make Vista conpatible, cheaper, and more people begin using it whether due to new computers pre-installed or upgrading, it's not feasible for you now.

I wouldn't advise you to do so. Especially if you are new at computers. Vista is too early in it's release and there are many compatibility issues. You should wait until:
#1 the price drops down
#2 there is a service pack release.

A service pack release like SP2 on XP will correct many of the known issues with the transition of XP to Vista.

If your computer came with XP I highly recommend sticking with it.

Vista is a brand new architecture from Microsoft. Therefore there may or may not be driver support for the hardware in your computer and you may find that some of the applications you already have on your computer under XP won't work with Vista.

Upgrading from one major operating system to another is crap shoot. Unless you are very computer savvy I wouldn't do it.

dont upgrade to vista.

1. most of the time your computer hardware may be not enough to run vista.

2. Most of the Software are not compatible with Vista yet.

But I must say Vista looks very nice.
