Catholics take the stance that wasting sperm is sin, which is why they oppose birth control as well (even for married couples).

Christians take the stance that masturbating while looking at pornography or thinking lustful thoughts is sin. In theory, you could masturbate by feeling alone and be A-OK by Christian dogma.

I don't know of any other religions that oppose it. (I'm grouping all Christian denominations together up there.) Ultimately the decision is yours. If someone wants to give you sh-t about it, just chide them on their automobile speeding, lack of tithing, purchases on Sunday, or any other sin that Christians routinely commit.

Anything done compulsively can be harmful.

Occasional auto-erotic stimulation, or as play with a partner is fun and healthy.

I like this advise from progressive Christianity: avoid thinking about anyone you know (unless they are your committed partner); especially avoid fantasies about people in other committed relationships this leads to unhealthy, unfulfillable desires (coveting).

Sorry for the "something else" but I would say masturbation is waaaaaaaaaaaayyy better than sex before you are married, from a Christian point of view anyways.
