My brother and sister in law are on the way to the hospital. I will be leaving once I brush my teeth

P.s. I wasn't consulting to decide if I should go, but to decide if it was legit or if I needed to lie.
:)

It should be but it depends on were you work. If its a place were you have some standing. I dont see where this should be a problem. If its a place were you are the only that can do your job.Y ou might have a problem. Either way I would be firm in telling your job you have to be with your brother.

It depends on where you work. If it's someplace like an office where the work can wait or other people share it, then you'd probably be OK, although you will likely be charged vacation time for the time off.

If you work someplace where this means that they'll be severely short and have to find someone else to come in and cover, then it might be a problem.

But in any case, enjoy your new niece!

If you have a personal day or vacation day and your work allows you to use them on a short notice then you could call in. If not, then I would go to work and let your boss know you would like to get off early if your niece is born before you get off work. Labor usually last a while, you could still work your shift and go to the hospital later or get your brother to call you when it gets closer to time.

It's a good reason depending on what kind of work you do and what kind of boss you have. For the average job with a reasonable manager, you should have no problems with that very ligitimate excuse. Congrats to your family!

It would be acceptable where I work, but every place is different. Does someone have to work late or extra hard to cover your absence? If so, be sure to call that person, too (not just your boss).

Tell them you have to take your sister to the hospital because she has gone into labor.
Get a reciept from the hospital parking to prove you were there.

"My sister in law is having a baby, I can't make it."
"You're coming in."
"I'm sick, it's a feminine issue"
--assuming the call-taker is a male--
"Oh, snap, have a nice day off."

Always works...I never argue with that one.
