the clouds of our consciousness that he is living on earth more firmly that if he came as one person? And that by Him living within us, we can bring Heaven to Earth rather than watch it be destroyed or escape from it?

I dont see that at all. We forget that sometimes Jesus was being quite literal. For instance in talking about his death. He wasnt being figurative and it really happened.

If Jesus' return was some type of metaphor you would have to go much further into every verse that speaks about the 2nd coming and explain all the elements. It raises many more Q's for instance in Matthew 24...

Why do his apostles take his 2nd coming to mean the end of the age?
If he is talking about an internal matter of faith and salvation, why all the external signs?

Jesus told the disciples before he ascended back to Heaven that He would return in "like manner to the selfsame place". In other words, he would come back PHYSICALLY. The disciples PHYSICALLY with their own eyes SAW Him ascend into the clouds and out of sight. The Revelation speaks of how He returns near the end of Armageddon "with a great CLOUD of witnesses" He left PHYSICALLY on the clouds and he will RETURN PHYSICALLY WITH a cloud. The only difference is that the clouds He ascended on were regular clouds. The cloud He returns with will be the Church saints that were taken up at the Rapture (in my humble opinion, but that's another story).

His return will be real and physical. Thessalonians tells us that the born again believers will be caught up to meet Him in the air. Be ready for His return as Matthew Ch.24 describes the times we will be living in at His return.
God bless!

No, he is speaking literally everywhere in the Bible when he talks of his return.

Not really (just because it sounds so disgustingly corny).
