+ The Church +

The Church was born on Pentecost when the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles. See Acts, chapter 2.

+ The Catholic Church +

This same Church has referred to itself as the “Catholic Church” at least since 107 C.E. (about 10 years after the last book of the New Testament was written), when the Greek term "Katholikos" (meaning universal) appears in the Letter of St. Ignatius of Antioch to the Smyrnaeans:

"Wherever the bishop appear, there let the multitude be; even as wherever Christ Jesus is, there is the Catholic Church."

We do not know how long they had been using the term "Catholic" before it was included in this letter.

All of this was long before the Council of Nicea and the Nicene Creed from 325 C.E. which states, "We believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church."

+ The Pope +

Here is biblical evidence that Peter was the first Pope.

John 21:15-17 states:

When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." He said to him, "Feed my lambs."

He then said to him a second time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." He said to him, "Tend my sheep."

He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter was distressed that he had said to him a third time, "Do you love me?" and he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." (Jesus) said to him, "Feed my sheep.

Matthew 16:17-19 states:

Jesus said to him in reply, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."

The Catholic Church believes the Lord made Simon alone, whom he named Peter, the "rock" of his Church. He gave him the keys of his Church and instituted him shepherd of the whole flock.

The Pope is the senior pastor of 1.1 billion Catholics, the direct successor of Simon Peter.

The Pope’s main roles include teaching, sanctifying, and governing.

At the Resurrection...

Perhaps your question should have been "When were Christians first called Catholic?"

The combination "the Catholic Church" (he katholike ekklesia) is found for the first time in the letter of St. Ignatius to the Smyrnaeans, written about the year 110. The words run: "Wheresoever the bishop shall appear, there let the people be, even as where Jesus may be, there is the universal [katholike] Church."

Just a little history for you all...

Matthew 16:18-19 "You are Peter, and upon this rock I shall build my Church....I give you the keys to the kingdom of Heaven"

Peter's given name was SIMON- Jesus changed it- and when God changes your name in scripture, it means He has BIG plans for you! Also- Keys are a symbol of authority and responsibility even in the Old Testamen.

Peter is ALWAYS listed first- and sometimes is the oNLY apostle named (i.e. Peter and the other apostles)

Peter's name is mentioned 195 times in the New Testament- MORE THAN ALL THE OTHER APOSTLES PUT TOGETHER!

Peter was the first Bishop of the Roman Church. The term Pope didn't come untill after the codification of the Church by the Council of Nicea in 365 CE. Catholic tradition is that the Bishop of Rome (Still the Pope's actual title) is the Pontif, anointed by God to lead the one true Church of Jesus the Christ.

The Church was made manifest to the world on the day of Pentecost by the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The gift of the Spirit ushers in a new era in the "dispensation of the mystery" the age of the Church, during which Christ manifests, makes present, and communicates his work of salvation through the liturgy of his Church, "until he comes." In this age of the Church Christ now lives and acts in and with his Church, in a new way appropriate to this new age. He acts through the sacraments in what the common Tradition of the East and the West calls "the sacramental economy"; this is the communication (or "dispensation") of the fruits of Christ's Paschal mystery in the celebration of the Church's "sacramental" liturgy.

Around the year 600. It was created in Rome as a political effort to combine all of the "religions" of the time into one "Universal Church". It was largely based upon Christian doctrine, but incorporated things from other sects as well.

Catholic means "Universal".

The Bible does not describe a position of "pope". It does not describe any church leadership structure beyond Deacons and Elders, and those only at the congregational level.

The Apostles, too, did not authorize any leadership beyond Deacons and Elders at the congregational level.

Peter was not the first pope. He was simply a member of the original 12 apostles, charged with spreading the Gospel to all nations. All they did was start the ball rolling. Once they died, the churches of Christ were on their own.
