What does it mean when you say something like "Being around you is like walking on broken glass"?

It means the person you are "around" is very touchy and you have to watch every comment you say.

I heard that song, I never really got it, either. To me, walking on broken glass is rather a stupid thing to do, and most people don't do it. They go get a broom and clean it up. Maybe it means that the only people that would be around this person are those that really aren't paying attention, because if they were paying attention, they wouldn't do it at all.

To walk on broken glass you need to be very careful and calm or you will cut your feet. So another words, being around you make somebody very conscience of what they are doing and very careful.
