The Republicans said this week "The Iraq war may go on for another 15 to 25 years". By that time we will have over 25,000 dead troops and then we will assess the war and if need be go another 15 to 25 years. I ask all here....are the Republicans on the right track?

As a soldier, I feel strongly about the absurd "rules of engagement" which severely limit the actions that a US Soldier can take in a war zone and as a result place him in jeopardy. The enemy has no "rules of engagement", and in fact are constantly thinking of new ways to breach our defenses and harm our soldiers. Little children and women have bombs strapped to them. They wear civilian clothes and snipe from windows and doorways, yet we are instructed to not shoot back unless we can actually engage them clear of other civilians, etc. They learned our "rules" quickly and use them against us constantly.
Get rid of the rules and let soldiers do what they do. I know this is not going to be popular in our bleeding heart world.

I guess you consider a football score 60-2 a loss. Body counts do not equal a winner and loser....a good example is the Afghans and the Russians. If we pull out right now it would be a loss from an Iraqi point of view. I believe 25 years or even 5 years is out of the question....the only thing will be a presence in the region at a fraction of the current troop strength.

I think if America finds sufficient oil elsewhere, they will withdraw from Iraq and the war will not go on for 15 to 25 years.

Alternatively, if America can put in a strong government(friendly to the USA) in Iraq, they can withdraw.

Else the war may go on indefinitely as per the Republicans predictions...

GREED, if they wanted to put a notch in the "W" column it would already have been over. The one constant you can count on is Baby Boomer greed, that's why they are called the ME generation.
Why do you ask... are the Republicans on the right track? Greed is rampant on both sides, take a look at the latest budget...The Dems have the highest levels of "EARMARK" spending and honestly; what have they done to end this war? Another unfullfilled promise from the left. This war will continue regardless as long as the 2 main parties are in power. They are the same.

We've been brainwashed into believing there is still something to win.

Didn't we win four years ago? We deposed Saddam and we determined that there are no WMDs in Iraq. Weren't those Bush's stated reasons for invading, in the first place?

There is nothing left to "win".

There is no way we are going to stop thousands of years of conflict between Shia and Sunni. Why is that now the criteria for "winning"? We can't stop it, and I don't believe we should even try. All we are accomplishing by trying is getting our own soldiers killed for a conflict that we are not a part of. Plus, we can't do what we should really be doing, which is going after Bin Laden in Pakistan.

How can anyone know if we are winning or losing in Iraq when no one seems to know what in the hell we are trying to accomplish? If we knew that then maybe some time lines could be set fro withdrawal. And if we do know what we are trying to accomplish, it seems we are no where close and all these years and lives are being wasted. I would like for someone to tell us what the are goals are and how long it might take. Stay the course doesn't cut it.

We over-estimated arabs.

Also, keep in mind when they say we'll be in Iraq for 15 years, they're not saying we'll have 150,000 soldiers sitting in Iraq for 15 years. The mission and resources will evolve.

What do you think the alternative will be? What will happen in Iraq and anywhere else that you think would be impacted if we pulled out immediately?

One can't decide whether a specific course is the right one without considering alternatives, so what will happen? Surely you know, you've given this a great deal of thought. Tell the rest of us.

Well the whole premise of the question is wrong. Why would you say we are loosing. I would say we could finish this thing sooner if we stopped trying to fight a political war and just clean house. Yes I said it open the flood gates and drowned the rats.
