My son is startin school this fall. He has gone by Nicky since birth, but everyone is gettin on my case because they say i should start calling him Nick, since thats what he will want to go by when he gets a lil older. Should i have him start getting used to Nick? If you ask him his name, he says its Nicky, so thats what he knows. What would you do?

Don't go by what other people tell you. What the heck do they know, what your kid likes?

My advice, listen to your son. If he likes Nicky, go with Nicky. When he reaches that age, where he wants to go by something else, then go with it. Your son should be the guide, not what other people think, or even YOU think. Your son has to live with the name, so go with what he likes.

well don't listen to everyone else. If he likes Nicky call him Nicky. My brother is 21 and still goes by Nicky. I mean yeah some people call him Nick and Nicholas but he still loves Nicky. So call him what you love to call him.

Just keep calling him Nicky... there's nothing wrong with it.. When he gets older if he wants to be called nick, he'll let everyone know.. why make a problem out of nothing..

He's just starting school so I would think Nicky is still OK.

I was Ricky until I got out of high school and was never teased about it. (Am still Ricky when the family gets together, but Rick most of the time now). I still think of Rick Schroeder as Ricky.

Go with Nicky.

You won't be there on the first day of school and when the teacher asks him, he'll say Nicky. If he doesn't like it next year, he'll change it. My son went from Drew in kindergarten, to Andrew in 1st grade, to AJ in 2nd grade, all because he told the teacher that is what he wanted to be called. He didn't even tell me! When his 2nd grade teacher was talking to me about AJ, I actually didn't know she was talking about my son! It is pretty crazy.

Don't worry about it when your son doesn't want Nicky anymore he will definitely let you know. My family called my brother Davey for years once he got about 10 he insisted on being called Dave. My son gets called Mikey he's 13 now and he wants to be called Mike only. Kids will speak up if they don't like something.

i don't understand that!. why should you change your sons name to please other people?. i know a guy called Nicky and he is ,41 yrs old!
The only way you should start calling him Nick is if he ASKS to be called Nick!. it has nothing to do with anyone else.it could actually be quite traumatic for him being told his name is changing.starting school is enough of a change for him already.let him tell you if and when he wants to change it and to hang with other people!

My cousin is almost 60 years old...still goes by Nicky. Call him whatever HE prefers to be called not what everyone else says he SHOULD be called.

No, call him Nicky. That's fine!! When he gets older (like Jr High age), he might tell you he doesn't like to be called that, but until then, call him what he's used to being called.

ask him what he prefers to be called. if he wants to be called nicky, then call him that. dont make him feel ashamed for wanting to be called that. as he continues through school, he might ask u at some point to call him nick.
