My 3 year old daughter got hives on Friday night. Since then, between the ER and her ped., we have been treating them. She has never had them before and nothing has changed in her diet, soap, detergent, etc. I'm looking for parents that have gone through the same thing to gather advice, etc. She is now on a steriod and histimine blocker that totally takes the hives away, however when the meds begin to wear off, they are right back!!! I'm extremely worried and frusturated. Thanks for any help.

If she is continuing to get them I would have to think whatever she is allergic to she is still eating, wearing, etc. Just because her diet or soap hasn't changed doesn't mean she can't suddenly be allergic to it. I used to eat shrimp all the time for 25 years and then poof became allergic and I break out in hives. Stress can also cause hives but she may be way too young for that. Has she been tested for allergies? That may be the way to go. I hope she feels better soon.

Though not a parent I would recommend

You check for ants or spiders that could bite her. Have you or a neighbor or where she goes to play or daycare have a "bug service"?

You ask the Ped about food allergies. Though you may not have changed her diet many times people as they age, adults too, develop food sensitivities and allergies. And soaps and detergents periodically "improve" their formula.

What you do is called deductive reasoning, meaning you think of each separate environment she is exposed to and on paper list that, then any changes.

After all that does not work, ask the Ped about seeing a specialist in skin and/or allergies!

Check other things. Have you changed something about you? Shampoo, soap, laundry or softner, etc... air freshner?
My daughter at one started having hives and I used Tide laundry soap that I had to change, plus, I couldn't use disposalable diapers that she also started breaking out from.
Doctors had no explanation as to why she developed these reactions, but she did.
That was 30 some years ago and she uses Tide now, but can't wear metal.
