Hi ºѪ⠳,

Most likely your friend meant to say 'tomorrow.': 'I'll send you an interesting e-mail tomorrow.'
The expression 'the following day' can be used to talk about past or future events.

In the past:
I saw Sandra in Rome on Friday and I met Nadia in Pisa the following day.

Future:
I will be working in Montevideo until Tuesday and then I will leave Uruguay the following day.

Think about it:
Today is Tuesday (August 7).
Yesterday was Monday .
The day before yesterday was Sunday .
Tomorrow will be Wednesday (August 8).
The day after tomorrow will be Thursday (August 9).

It depends what day he was referring to. If he was talking about some day in the future, then the following day is the day after that. It may be specific or not.

Example:

I am going on a trip next Friday. I will send you something the following day. (specific)

I am leaving some time next week. I will send you an email the following day. (non-specific) It refers to the day after he gets there whatever day that is.

Luke 13:33 says: Nevertheless I must walk to day, and to morrow, and the [day] following: for it cannot be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem.

Luke 13:32 says: Go ye, and tell that fox, Behold,
I - I cast out devils, and
II - I do cures to day and to morrow, and
III - the third [day] I shall be perfected.

The third day is neither of two last days (0-2000AD).
But the third is also the seventh day is the last day.
Of the third day JC said God said: I shall be perfected.

The GRACE of our Lord Jesus Christ with you all. Amen.

In general, it means the days following (after) the one you are talking about. So, in the past, "I saw ºѪ⠳ a week ago and, the following day, I saw him again."
