"Bible-fundamentalists made Christianity a laughing stock by claiming they are Christians while preaching their warped and ridiculous interpretation of the Bible."
I very much agree with that statement. I have observed them. they go door to door and preach their opinions about the verses in the Bible that they read, and it differs depending what suits them at the moment that results to them contradicting themselves.

fundamentalism: strict adherence to any set of basic ideas or principles.
Shalei, that's for you. piece the words "Bible" and "fundamentalist" together and you have your answer.

You misunderstand the concept of the word fundamental. The Bible does not need to be interpreted and fundamentalist read the Bible for what it says. They follow the directions "as written". When you claim the Bible is open to interpretation, you are opening the door for many false beliefs and justifications based on your beliefs.
When you follow the directions to assemble a bicycle, you are a fundamentalist. You do not look at the instructions and interpret the steps necessary to put the bike together. You follow the instructions for what they say.
Here is the point: let the Bible speak for itself and when you see it in the Book believe it for what it says.
The Bible Was Written To Be Understood
* Deut. 30:11-14 the word is not out of reach.
* 31:9-13 to be read to men, women, children every seven years, an enduring process
* It was to all Israel: smart, dumb, conservatives, liberals
* those who didn't know it were expected to learn it Luke 1:1-4 Luke carefully investigated the life of Jesus that you might know the certainty of the things you have been taught.
* 2 Cor. 1:13 Paul wrote no other thing but what you can understand.
* Eph. 3:3-4 Paul wrote so that "you can understand when you read."
* 1 John 2:21 John said Christians can know the truth and can distinguish a lie.

That warped and ridiculous interpretation is from taking the Bible LITERALLY.
That being said, I find it ridiculous that people would cherry pick from a book that inspired one of the ugliest parts of our culture, and then try not to associate themselves with the people actually following the religion by the book. Makes no sense to me.
edit- hey crimson and clover: remember you said that the next time you go railing against gays...

No more than I would agree with the statement that all atheists are immoral.
So let me get this straight. If a Christian goes to church and follows what they believe, theyre labeled an idiotic sheeplike robot for not thinking for themselves. And if they read the Scriptures themselves and form their own views, then they are radicals driven by wherever their whims blow them. So I guess there is no way to win in the eyes of their critics is there? Well thats a good thing we're here to preach the Gospel to the people that need and want it, not the people that reject it.
Fundie is just a term to mock anybody who takes God's word seriously and I feel really bad for those who dont.

Are you talking about the JWs? Yes, I regard them as fundamentalists. No, I think they are remarkably consistent in their interpretation of scripture; just personally feel that their entire premise is mistaken--scripture is not inspired of god---god does not exist, surely not in any anthropomorphic form. However, I could certainly be entirely mistaken--think I should make a wager on it?

Most *professing*-Christian fundies have been conned into subscribing to the moronic hate-agendas of the RRR Cult -- the "Religious" Radical Right. Which comprises only a mere 6% of the USA's professing Christians. FEW of them go door-to-door, but they are VERY dedicated to hatefully seeking to destroy valuable personal liberties for millions of people.
The RRR Cult should NEVER be confused with actual Christians. Normal, fair-minded, UNobtrusive and tolerant Christians comprise 94% of all of the USA's *professing* Christians. We are your ordinary, work-a-day next-door neighbors.
The RRR Cult **IS** America's National Laughingstock.
Unfortunately, it also is dangerous to our Civil Rights, because ---
RRR : Society :: 5% arsenic solution : glass of drinking water.
