She is really upset that I asked her to do some more research before sharing her view with others on these issues. Do you think I was wrong?

You have a smart sister.

Even if you're wrong about global warming (which you're not), there's nothing wrong with telling a person to research an issue before spreading their views to others. That's something everyone should do regarding every issue.

Otherwise you get people like Mr. Jello spreading a bunch of misinformation, and that just makes everyone a little dumber. We don't need people going around saying global warming isn't real, because there's absolutely no disputing that it's a real phenomenon:

The only debate is about whether or not humans are causing it, and almost all scientific experts are agreed that we're the primary cause of the current global warming:

If your sister were right then she shouldn't have any problem with researching the issue, because that would just prove that she's right. She probably got angry because she's embarassed that she hasn't researched the issue and her position is based on ignorance. Keep encouraging her to learn - it's the only way we're going to solve this problem.

Maybe your sister really does not care about global warming. I guess that is her point. But if you want to convince her that it is very real then some of the most important facts of research is needed so it can get through her head. It sounds like maybe she is also not interested to research it herself. Well at least wonder if you or her has free time to look at National Geographic Channel or Discovery Channel. Usually they air programs which explicate how global warming affects the earth/ how it came to be at present and so forth. Tell her to watch programs like these. They are very factual and will give alot of information that you will understand.

Regardless of whether or not anyone believes in global warming, we are a nation of overconsumers. We should all try and conserve what we have. Littering, overconsumption of energy, wasting water.............these are all things that should not be done regardless. Not only will stopping these practices be good for the environment, but ultimately for our own health. It's like having a pocket full of money, spending it frivolously and then wondering where it all went.

Tell your sister it's really just a matter of being responsible and respectful and shouldn't we all do that?

Doing more research is always a good thing. I would, rather than telling her not to discuss the issue, tell her that she might make a fool of herself if she doesn't research it more. But as you can see from around here, if you really, really want one's own view to be "right" well there are plenty around to help you keep your opinion and let the facts be damned.

Anyone who wishes to share their views, whatever they are, needs to do research beforehand. This provides a solid factual foundation for debate and beliefs. Even if she doesn't buy into the global warming, at least she can say she truly knows what she's talking about. Without researching first, people are bumbling morons without a clue.

Not at all. People should attempt to be as informed as possible about an issue before taking a stance on it.

I would argue, however, that the =point= of discussing these issues is to gain a deeper understanding of them. So talking about climate change with people who know more about it than you is a good thing.

Research either way can be suspect, she has a right to voice her opinion, every much as you do.
Especially as she is probably more right than you think.

Did you tell her that the only scientific organization is the world that denies Global Warming as fact is the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. Their argument of course, is based on the price of oil per barrel. They support research on issues that support their position, rather than climate research aimed at learning more.

Depends on the research that you told her to do. If you mean reading and studying both sides of the issue, good for you. If you mean listening to just the alarmists, then I think you were wrong.

Your sister may be wise. It's easy to be a sheep and repeat all the politically correct slogans like a parrot but it's not smart.
