Retired Air Force - 10 yrs exp AF Recruiter.
Absolutely Correct - you have a military obligation for 8 years however, as an American Citizen, your military obligation can go even longer.
I entered the AF just as I turned 18. When I retired 20 years later, I received a letter from the Dept of Defense letting me know that I still needed to inform them of my residence and medical status.
Now, this may be only for members who have retired -
Enlisted members of the Reg Air Force with 20 yrs active duty but less than 30 yrs have a dual status as a Retired Reg Active Duty member of the Retired Reserve. These members are liable for recall to active duty under Title 10, USC 12301 or under Title 10, USC 688.
Upon completion of 30 years total service, the enlisted member assumes Retired Regular Status and is subject to recall under Title 10, USC 688 only.
Retired enlisted reservists are subject for recall only in time of war or national emergency as declared by congress.
Recalling any member back to duty is based upon the needs of the recalling service. Recalls took place right after the 2nd Iraq War started with many veterans volunteering without being called.
I believe the only services that actually recalled were the Army and the Marines.

it extremely is no longer something new. once you first connect the militia you incur an 8 3 hundred and sixty 5 days criminal accountability. in case you're going lively accountability, you always serve between 2 to 4 years lively accountability accompanied by potential of time as a drilling reservist or by potential of serving time interior the inactive waiting reserve - or some combination that provides as much as eight years. in case you're a reservist, you always might desire to serve 6 years as a drilling reservist accompanied by potential of two years interior the inactive waiting reserve. you need to serve all 8 years lively or all 8 years as a drilling reservist. the element which you're able to desire to appreciate is that in case you're interior the inactive waiting reserve, you will possibly properly be stated as back to lively accountability. do no longer think of that all and sundry heck has to interrupt out to be activated from the IRR. 1000's of squaddies have been recalled to lively accountability.

He did not sign up for only 4 years his contract clearly stated 4 years active and 4 years inactive for a total of 8 years. if what your bf did in the army is needed he can get called back for up to another 4 years. i got out of the navy 3 years ago and have one more to go and have been called back in twice for weekend trainings and stuff. due to my job being needed right now. but yes if they want him back for the other 4 years they can call him and if he is in when those 4 years are up and they still need him they Can put a stop loss order out on that job and no one in that job can get out.

To be called back from IRR
They decide what they need, job specilization etc.
Then they take that list narrow it down by type of discharge.
RE-R1 will get the phone call first.
If they still want to narrow it down they will pull service records. It all depends on what they need at the time. If he had a bunch of specilizations and training chances are a little higher he will get a call. If he was just basic rifleman don't worry about your phone ringing.

being recalled is going to depend on the persons MOS and how long they have been out,, they are gong to call the ones back that have not been out that longdo to the fact they will not have to retrain them,, everything will still be fresh in there head.and then they work back from that.

being recalled mostly depends on your job specialty. if there is a critical need, they call those people with that MOS up first.

I haven't heard of any "inactive" reserves being called back up. It would be by job need, not by unit.
