Hard to tell what you're asking; are they offering you the corporate CEO job or are you inquiring about being an agent? Let me guess you talking about being a sales agent selling policies somewhere.

Allstate has(had) a long history with a stable agency force, but then decided to go in other directions: They
1. Changed all salaried insurance agents to 1099 "independent" contractors on straight commission
2. Cut the commissions when losses got out of control
3. Spent millions on a web site and campaign to bypass the agency force
4. Created Encompass to compete against their own company agents through independent agencies.
5. Allow Allstate policies to be sold through insurance brokers (at least in Ohio).

So as an Allstate agent, you get to enter a cutthroat business where you'll compete against your competition AND your own company. You'll get some flimsy agency structure where owning and controlling your book is questionable AND enjoy no benefits AND pay your own expenses. As an added bonus, you'll be captive and only allowed to sell Allstate product. What did they offer you? Last I heard it was $6000 to start your own office.

This might work you; if you sell enough, you'll make money. If I were you, I'd keep looking.

Are you considering claims?

If so, Allstate is one of the larger companies and most likely to having openings. If you are looking to get into claims, starting with them will give you good benefits, 401 k w/ profit sharing and a salary that is on the higher side of starting w/o experience.

Since this is a public forum, I'm not going to air the dirty laundry. But my advice would be to start with them - do the best job you can and learn as much as you can - get your experience and in 1-2 years move onto another company.

do not work for allstate if you can avoid it. do not believe all the rosy comments you read about them. at some point you will regret working for them. they pay very well but you take a large amount of abuse from both the customers and the management. management is always on your back over the smallest nit picky things. it is a very demeaning culture. you are treated like a child who does not know how to do anything good enough even after working there for many years.

All insurance companies have good points and bad points. You should try working in an agents office first to see if you like the products they offer. I know for me I prefer being independent.

What do you mean by 'good'?

The pay will vary depending on what region you're in, your experience and what position you are doing. You may be able to find more about their benefits under career opportunities on their website.
