John Doe goes into walmart with a printed out barcode for something cheap like hand sanitizer. He puts that barcode over the barcode of a higher priced item, then pays for it. He then goes back to the store, takes off the fake barcode and gets a refund. I read about this on a website, but it doesn't make sense. Wouldnt the receipt have the info from the product of the fake barcode???? How do he get the refund?

The receipt would show the cheap item only, so he could not take it back for a refund. The only thing he could get away with is paying the cheap-item price for the more expensive item -- and ONLY if the clerk wasn't paying too much attention in the first place. It definitely wouldn't work for something like a hand-sanitizer barcode covering a TV or iPod barcode, unless the clerk was a total moron.

What it could work for is a 42 oz box of Cherrios covered with 10 oz Cherrios barcode.

This scam is still shoplifiting, though -- anyway you look at it.

He gets a refund without the receipt, most likely not a cash refund, but a store credit or voucher. (Like if you were returning an ugly sweater to a store that your Granny gave you for Christmas, without a receipt.)

That's waaaaaaaaaay illegal. Hope you aren't considering it....

i have also heard of that. someone goes into a store and buys a 6 pack of coke.

he goes home, drinks half of it and returns to the store, complains, and he gets a full refund plus hes not thirsty anymore.

elaborate, huh?
