Can be done while you wait at a DVLA Office. You may have to wait a fair while, but will be done on the day...

If you are planning on retaining or transferring the number plate allow a couple of weeks. The dvla know you can not take your custom else where so they will take as long as they feel. If the plate is being sold with the car no extra steps are required.

I've already done this myself and it can be done while u wait at a DVLA office. Mine took about 15 minutes after the 45 minute wait in the queue. to remove the plate and put it on retention costs £105 (£80 transfer fee and £25 for 12 months retention)
