For the first 3 years a drive is EVER insured, he is put in a RISK POOL no matter HOW OLD the driver is---he could be 30 and if it's his or her first time with a license and driving---he or she is in the risk pool for 3 years until they prove by not having any accidents or insurance claims that they are good drivers... Then, all rates go down a LITTLE after that 3 year period (both males and females) HOWEVER, males will not see a significant reduction in their insurance rates until the age of 25 and if they are MARRIED, their rates will decrease again....statistically, young men are SUPPOSED to be the worst drivers (men under 25) and as they mature and get married, it is statistically proven that men become even MORE responsible behind the wheel so rates drop again... AS LONG AS YOU'VE HAD NO ACCIDENTS... If you have an accident, there is a surcharge you will pay extra on your insurance for the next 3 years following an AT FAULT ACCIDENT... Also, should an accident you are involved in cause DEATH of severe bodily injury, some insurance companies will CANCEL your coverage altogether.....(usually after a large settlement or payment to the injured parties)...and getting NEW insurance can be an EXTREMELY costly venture after something like that----ALSO, get a DUI or a DWI and watch those insurance rates SKYROCKET (if you aren't automatically cancelled)... Car insurance is a HUGE business in this country---companies do NOT like to lose money---as the statistics RISE for accidents and the amount of young drivers increases, the insurance rates WILL keep going up----- I also truly believe that ELDERLY DRIVERS should be FORCED to re-take their ROAD TEST at LEAST every two YEARS once they get past the age of 70.... I have seen some EXTREMELY reckless elderly drivers lately especially since I retired (I'm 56)... I wouldn't doubt that since the number of ELDERLY who are out on the roads has increased as baby boomers come of age, insurance rates will take another leap UPWARD for ALL of us.
Taking Driver's Ed in high school and a defensive driving course offered in MOST towns WILL give you credits toward reducing your insurance....I believe it's 10% off each individually.

Some companies offer cheaper rates to females than males. Many are now changing and making 25 years old the age for lowering insurance premiums on all drivers. Right now, 25 is the magic number.

Usually age 25. Men average more miles driven per year than women do, and have a proportionally higher accident involvement at all ages. Insurance companies cite women's lower accident involvement in keeping the youth surcharge lower for young women drivers than for their male counterparts but adult rates are generally unisex. Reference to the lower rate for young women as "the women's discount" has caused confusion that was evident in news reports on a recently defeated EC proposal to make it illegal to consider gender in assessing insurance premiums.[6] Ending the discount would have made no difference to most women's premiums. Teenage drivers who have no driving record will have higher car insurance premiums. However young drivers are often offered discounts if they undertake further driver training on recognised courses, such as the Pass Plus scheme in the UK. In the U.S. many insurers offer a good grade discount to students with a good academic record and resident student discounts to those who live away from home. Generally insurance premiums tend to become lower for everyone at the age of 25. Senior drivers are often eligible for retirement discounts reflecting lower average miles driven by this age group.

It doesn't as females are statistically at less risk of accidents than men.
