I am looking at a 1999 dodge ram 1500 sport pickup. It has 160K miles on it. Also has the 360 V8 motor. Can anyone tell me how the trannny going to be at the many miles or the engine. Thanks

It's a Dodge. Forget what the Toyota people tell you. Dodge trucks are superior to Toyota's. The only thing better is a Ford F series. Drive the truck and see how it performs. The Tranny is a good unit and dependable. 160K means it's broken in now. Look at the engine oil, is it dark and thick? Is it clean and golden? Is everything under the hood where it's supposed to be? Does the seller have a service log/diary? Take it for a ride and be sure to take it out on the Interstate. Look for handling problems, engine smoke, listen for noises, how does it look? 160K is small miles for a good truck but reduces the price if you're savvy to negotiate.

Depends how it has been treated. That is a lot of miles for any vehicle but as long as the motor has had regular oil changes it should still last another 60,000+ miles easy. The transmission is not prone to failure on that vehicle but still if it has been used for towing, off roading or lots of city driving it could very well be worn out. Best way to get an indicator of this is to check the tranny fluid, if it is still nice and red and smells normal then it is probably still healthy, if it is brown and burnt smelling then the tranny probably is starting to slip and build heat due to worn out clutch paks and or torque converter. Also check the coolant and engine oil and note if they are nice and clean, this is an indicator of how it has been looked after and maintained. There are other considerations as well though, at that mileage things like, U-joints, tie rods, ball joints, wheel bearings, starter, alternator, water pump, power steering and AC compressor will start to wear out. You should note if any of these look like they have been replaced recently or ask for receipts. Things like that could really nickel and dime you to death on a vehicle that age and miles. Good luck!

I have a 98 that I took from Tampa,Florida to central Texas with an entire house packed into it and a 6x12 trailer- the trailer had no breaks. My truck has 240 K- all stock and no problems yet.

I would ask the owner if it has had the timing chain changed yet. Also what if any services has the transmission had filter and fluid changes how often or never done.If these things have been done they probably took care of it and it should make a nice truck. If they haven't been done I 'd keep looking.

Hello, I own two rams of that body style, if you get crazy with it in reverse you will lose reverse but if ya be good to it it will last, the engine will kick *** with a few good parts and some time so go for it!

Just take it to a mechanic and ask them to check it out. With that many miles, if it hasn't been replaced or rebuilt, more than likely its gonna happen here sometime soon.

It all depends on the former owner(s). If it was well taken care of and serviced regular, it should be good for another 100,000. But, if the former owner(s) didn't take care of it. it will be junk, just like Toyota, Ford, Chevy, etc.

those are good trucks to own,i had one and it was a power house, they run exceptionally well, and hold up really good, also the transmission in it should be alright ,you,ll eventually have to do work to it,but you do on all of them,if you can get a good deal on it that would be a good truck to have, good luck on it.
