My cousin is 17 and will be going to Iraq soon. He wants a laptop to write home and watch movies on, and play games. But I dont know which one will hold up to that much abuse. Which one should we buy?

Panasonic Toughbook but the Marines should provide one for his use. It might a shared one but he would have access to one nonetheless.

Depending on what FOB he's at they'll most likely have computers; but the lines are looonngg. Makes life easier if you've got your own laptop. Panasonic has a laptop called a "Toughbook" and it's geared specifcally toward a hard work environment. It's set up for wireless access, has a spill proof key board and the outside is made of really tough material and has a handle for carrying. He doesn't need a lot of bells and whistles if he's just going to be using it for email and to watch movies; so this should work nicely. By the way, that's a really thoughtful thing to do for your cousin! I KNOW he'll appreciate it and will get a lot of use out of it.

EDIT:

I was just thinking that I read something not long ago in the Army Times that mentioned a Military discount. I'm not 100% sure...it might have been another company; but I thought it might be them. You could get in touch with them and ask about it...all they can say is no. Even if you're not active duty some companies will give a discount if they know the product is being bought for a soldier in/going to Iraq. My grandma, who is prior service but never retired, was able to get a good discount on one when she got one for my husband during his first tour.

They do have community computers in Iraq. Depending where he is at, he may not have alot of time on them because everyone wants time on them. Most guys go together and have internet hooked up in their rooms. Both my sons got a laptop with a good gaming card. They also bought an external hard drive to keep pictures and a journal on.

My boys have had very good luck with Toshiba. Also, he should get one with a built in web cam. It has come in very handy for them.

Most name brand laptops will work just fine. We had several over there that guys brought, I don't remember any problems with them. Just make sure to send the compressed air cans so he can clean the dust out of them.

You cant ship canned air over there anymore, but as long as he keeps it covered up when hes outside his area whether its a tent or building it should be fine, ive had a gateway and an hp and they both did fine!
