Will those of you who place your god above your family please take a moment to explain why this is?

As an atheist, I have no understanding of how one could not put their family first, especially their children.

I apologize if this is offensive, and please excuse me if it is poorly worded. I'm not sure what to say at the moment.

In appreciation of your honesty, no one will receive a thumbs down from me.

I thought it was funny that they included God as a "person" in the first place. God is important to me, but I didn't even consider including him on that list...because he's not a person!

And even funnier that I got thumbs down for saying my mom and my brothers are most important to me. I don't get it! Did I say something wrong?

I believe in God and I put my family first. In fact you're supposed to in ways. For instance, if a child in your family is sick you are excused from mass that week if you have to take care of them and such. Putting your family first isn't actually wrong, see, you can't have other gods, it isnt necessarily God's first. I hope this answered your question from a more liberal perspective. See some conservatives would actually twist the words into "God first" when that's not even what the Bible says, so that even makes them extremists.

With much respect towards anyone who tackles the question of God first in an honest way (heads up Zaorox99!) Matthew chapter 10 verse 35: For I have come to turn a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.
Verse 36: A man's enemies will be the members of his own household
Verse 37: Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.
Verse 34 (& my personal favourite): Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth: I did not come to bring peace but a sword.
Faith in salvation from the son of God apparently requires that all earthly devotion is subordinate to worship of that God, whatever may come.
Whatever makes people better people works for them. Defining faith as being devotedly grateful for all you have, including those who come into our lives, even beyond all concerns for their welfare or safety is a big request, I don't care what you wrote or when.
Just don't ask it of me. Ever.
Love to all, even the ignorant.
Take care & all the best.
& damn fine question!

Because many times I have seen where- God has taken care of my family members. I still have my mother --because of God's healing hand--through my wild & rebellious years & through being abandoned by the father of my child I was blessed with a beautiful compassionate daughter- Who has loved God in a way many could never understand- she has helped me- in my coming back...
All that I have --I have because of HIM. He will always be first in my life.

I dont really have an answer, but I want you to know you're not alone in wondering this. My husband always says that God is the most important even over our two daughters. Im not an Atheist, but Im not overly religious either. But I know one thing for sure, nothing, not even God comes before my children. Great, Im probably going to hell now.

every person has beliefs whether they are based on religion or not. when raising a child you teach them what you feel is right and wrong and correct them when they go against that belief system. we love our children, family, and friends so we do for them what we feel is best for their well being. there are very few lessons in life that can be taught painlessly.so when you correct your children you are putting your beliefs (based on God or yourself) before them? it really all about how you decide to word it.

simple...I am a Christian and I put God first because that is what is right, this IN NO WAY takes away from my family but only enhances my relationship with them. When I say God first I mean that I put my faith and trust in Him and pray try to lead a good life and teach my children about Him and Jesus. Through my relationship with Christ I feel that Im a better person and more aware of my actions towards others, no its not a burden but only a blessing. Im sorry you dont agree but that is your right and your opinion, but you shouldnt judge other people on their right to believe what they want as well.

Your an atheist! That's the problem.
God Made my Family.
God Gave me the most precious gifts someone can give to another and that is my children.
I thank him everyday for my whole family. (Dad, Mom, kids, grandparents, Brothers, sister all of them)
He is first because he created us, watches over us and is only a mention of his name away.
Any time there is a problem just by calling on him, there is always an over whelming calmness over any situation.
With all this in mind I ask
How couldn't he possibly be the first thing in my life?
