I just had an ekg done about an hour ago, and my doctor said that it was beautiful. But he didn't tell me what exactly an ekg does. Can anyone tell me what a beautiful ekg means?

An EKG is a graphic representation of the electrical activity of the heart. There is a node, or spot of specialized tissue, called the Sinoatrial node. It generates a small electrical impulse that spreads thruout the heart muscle, to cause it to contract and force blood out to the lungs and arteries. The EKG can measure the proper flow of this current, direction and cooordination to ensure the heart beats efficiently. If you had heart block, or a prior heart attack, the electrical activivty has to take a different path, to get around the damaged area. This shows up on the EKG, and helps us to see what is wrong.
If your tracing was beautiful, that would mean it looks quite normal.

They will place some sticky pads on your chest, arms and legs that has wires. This measures the electrical impulses that your heart puts out. It's not painful and only takes a few minutes. Tell the person doing the test about the skipped beats and breathing. Also wear a sports bra and they my not have to undress you all the way. You could ask the technologist if you could leave it on.
