I've been on my father's insurance plan since I was 16. Now, a graduate from college and living in NYC, I no longer need a car. While I do occasionally take trips home and enjoy a car ride by myself, I think it would be a better for my father financially if I took my name off my dad's policy (no speeding tickets, only one car accident when I was 16 which didn't raise insurance premium, but nonethless). My father wants to keep me on because he knows how much I love driving when I get home on those few occasions where I do and I need to be insured (he's good like that). However, I know it would save my dad money if I was taken off... and since living in the city, it seems like a sound decision. My question is whether it's possible to remove my name from the policy without my father's permission. Also... if I ever want to use a rental car, is the insurance the company provides enough to cover me, or do they require supplemental insurance, as well?

By the way, I don't think getting my own policy is a great idea either.. given the amount of time I spend driving.

If you are not a member of your father's household (meaning you have your own legal residence outside of his home) then you do not need to be listed on his insurance to drive his car when visiting home. As long as you are not excluded from the policy (either by name or by a clause that says all drivers must be "X" years of age or older and you are less than "X" years old) and are not a member of the household, then any driver is covered! Your dad should talk to his agent! He may be paying for something that he does not need to!

When you rent a car, you should be able to get all needed coverages from the rental car company! Some companies require you to have your own coverage for liability, but the major rental companies do not!

You do not need insurance to have a driver's license!!

Hiya:

If you do not LIVE with your father (and are not EXCLUDED) you will be covered for driving his vehicle.

(If you are out of school - he would NOT be able to keep you on his policy anyway if you did not live in his household. That's kinda like insuring your neighbor for no reason.)

Something to keep in mind though....Most states have financial responsibility laws requiring that you PROVE you have insurance (by showing insurance card) or sign a form stating that you do when you go to get your license.

Rental car companies will provide liability insurance to you at rip-off rates. (my personal observation, lol). They will also try to sell you ALL kinds of additional stuff with excessive charges - Collision damage coverage, waive deductible coverage....etc.

I would recommend that you look into getting at the very least - a state minimum liability policy.

Goodluck!

The thing to keep in mind is you have to have ins. to maintain a drivers license so if your father insists then stay on the policy and pay him what he pays for you to be on there it will be a benifit for the both of you cheaper rates for you and he will have what he wants and be getting paid for it.
WIN WIN situation.
