Every one of the people who answered your question are correct. I think your question about a city within a city comes from the Dutch when they originally settled in Manhattan. At the time, long before the Brooklyn Bridge was built, the areas of land that is now part of New York City were cities unto themselves. They were not part of New Amsterdam (that's what the Dutch called Manhattan at that time), but were called boroughs. The word "borough" is a middle English word that means a shelf sustaining area of population, having its own taxing structure, governing body, and its own laws, and completely autonomous from every other borough. In the case of Brooklyn, it was in fact a city long before Manhattan was settled by the Dutch. The term "borough" is still used today, but each of the five boroughs are no longer autonomous from the others. Here's an interesting fact, only one of the five boroughs that make-up New York City is connected (by land) to the rest of the country. The Bronx.

Manhattan is the main borough of the Five boroughs in New York City. There are no cities within Manhattan, but there are lots of distinct neighborhoods, all with their own character, like the East & West Village, Tribeca, Chinatown, Meatpacking District, the Upper West Side, Murray Hill, etc. Grab a map with the neighborhood listings and you'll see them all.
There's no Rockefeller avenue in Manhattan. Maybe you mean Rockefeller Center? That's on 5th avenue at around 47th street.

New York City has five boroughs, all of which are controlled by the same city government, under the mayor. Each borough has its own borough president also. Manhattan is not the "main" borough, but most of the city government is located there. The boroughs are Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island. There are also islands that are part of the city, like Roosevelt Island, which is considered part of New York County, which includes Manhattan.

Yes it's a borough.
But Manhattan is the main borough. It's like the downtown part of all 5 boroughs. Manhattan has a lot of the tall skyscrapers and famous landmarks
Brooklyn, The Bronx, Queens, & Staten Island are the other boroughs around it.
Jersey City & Hoboken are right across the Hudson river from Manhattan

Manhattan is a Borough of the City of New York. It is an island as is Staten Island, another Borough of NYC. Queens and Kings (Brooklyn) counties are on an island (Long Island) and they are also boroughs of NYC. The Bronx is the only Borough of NYC attacked to the mainland US. All together there are 5 boroughs. Rockefeller Center is in Manhattan.
