do you ever think about if the situation were reversed, would these people have donated money to help you out?

I am not giving to get something out of it. But if the situation were reverse, and they didn't care about my plight, then that would be hurtful. My original question is just a theoretical one.

It doesn't matter whether they would help me or not, all that I care about is doing what I can for others. If I thought that I would receive something in return then I would have no joy in giving.

Does it matter? If you're donating because you feel it's the right thing to do, or because you want to, should you care about "what you can get out of it"?
Just my own $0.02. I've got bags of clothes that I'm bringing to a Christian-based charity this weekend, because there is a drive going on for some needy families in the area. Do I think that they'd donate to me (as a Pagan) if I were in need? Some of them probably wouldn't. Do I care? No - the clothes will go to someone who needs them, and THAT is what matters.
And who knows, maybe by reaching beyond the boundaries of "they don't believe the same things I do" I can encourage others to do the same.
(After reading Jana's post, I may have to send some of the donation over to the charity she mentioned!)

Every month I donate to at least one organization. Sometimes around the holidays I send more.
I think those who have recieved help are more likely to help others in the future, so yes. I do think that a reversed situation would work.

I was raised in a Christian children's home in Keller, Tx. Its called Christs Haven for Children if anyone wants to google and support it...and I can tell you, the people you are helping when you give support to them will come to a time when they will be quite willing to pay it forward. The place I was raised in was fully supported by donations and charity...if it weren't not for that place and the foster parents I have had then I wouldn't be sitting here today. I'm sure they didn't open up their home to me thinking...geez, I hope Jan takes us in the next time we're homeless. Love in Christ, ~J~

I never question whether or not the offering would be turned the other way. I tithe (offer 10%) to my local congregation which sponsors a variety of ministries. I also support other charities of a more secular nature. Offering gifts of charity does as much good for me as it does for the recipients.

No, I don't think about that. Since the charities serve so many people, it would be sill to speculate about such a large group of people.
The answer is probobly, some would and some wouldn't.

Perhaps not, but why should that make a difference. Helping people usually has more effect on the one who is helping than those recieving the help.

No, not really. I just hope that they would do the same, but I don't give it thought how likely that is.
