but you probably have to delete a ton of files.....
1. go to add/remove programs (control panel, add/remove)
2. defragment your pc (programs, accesories, system tools, defrag)
3. delete your temporary internet files (run, type in temp)

Yeah, clean up the computer. It isn't the fault of the operating system if the computer runs slow, it is because of the build-up of junk.
1. Use Disk Cleanup to remove old files. Click on Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools and Disk Cleanup. Remove everything it finds.
2. Download, install and run Auslogics Disk Defragger. It is much faster than Windows defragger and more efficient. Over time, the disk becomes so fragmented, it takes the memory much longer to find things when you ask for them.
3. Go to Microsoft's Live OneCare Cleanup Scan and clean up the registry of left-over files. It is safe and fast.
4. Get SpyBot Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware from download.com. Install and run both of them. Immunizde the computer first in SpyBot, then run a bot check and remove everything it finds using Fix Selected Problems. Run a full system scan in Ad-Aware and remove everything it finds.
5. Go to Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel and remove unused or old programs or games you no longer use or play. Always restart the computer after uninstalling a program, so XP can save the new settings.
6. If you do this and your computer doesn't run faster, then you either need a computer upgrade or more memory. Usually more RAM will fix a slow computer.

) Check for spyware. Run both Ad-aware Peronal Edition ( http://www.lavasoftusa.com ) and Skybot (http://www.safer-networking.org/) to remove any spyware. Run both as one may caught something the other missing.

2) Check that you have a least 10% of your hard drive free. Go to My Computer and right click on the Local Drive (C:). Look at the properties. If it has less that 10% free space, you will need to delete some files, or move them off the hard drive and on to a CD or DVD. Start by running the disk cleanup, which will remove temporary and other unneeded files. Go to Start, then All Programs, Accessories, then System Tools and click the Disk Cleanup icon.

3) Run the msconfig utility. Go to Start, then Run and type in: msconfig
Go to the startup tab
You will see a list of all the programs that are loaded when your computer starts up. Uncheck any that you do not have to have. (Usually you can uncheck them all). If you decide you to need one, you can go back and recheck it.

4) Defrag the hard drive. Go into My Computer and right click on the Local Drive (C:). Select Properties and go into the Tools tab. Click the Defragment Now button to start the defrag program. If you have not defrag recently (or never) it may take several hours for the program to complete.

Here is a really good site that tells you how to speed up your computer: http://www.howtodothings.com/computers/a3415-how-to-make-your-computer-faster.html
It explains programs you can use to make your computer faster, as well as things you should do weekly and monthly, and how to (safely!) edit Regedit to make your PC run faster.
