It's really not. In one apartment I had nothing BUT north light, and it was the worst place I ever painted in. Dim as a cave.

The mythic importance of north light is that it usually isn't direct (reducing glare) and it isn't too yellow. If you're going to put in a skylight, that's always nice, and you can orient the skylight to the north.

Otherwise, nothing will beat good modern artificial interior lighting, and a color-balanced work lamp like an Ott.

Because it is natures most impressive light show. It can not be reproduced by painting, photography, laser show or what have you.

Doesn't mean artist will not try but achieving it will always be a dream of many.

OH WAIT.. that is Northern lights... heh heh.

North light is basically the most diffuse light. The sun will never shine directly into your studio. At least on this hemisphere. When painting all day you want light to be as constant as you can get it....in nature a window facing north does this. Nowadays we have excellent artificial light so it isn't a big issue any more but having a studio facing south will mess up your light during the day anyway.

I'm not an artist, but from what I understand of positions and lightings is the huge and tones change depending on what direction the sun is in the sky. The north light might just be the balance most artist like while painting or photo shoots.

Northern light is the natural light source that changes the least amount throughout the day. Therefore, if an artist is painting a still life using northern natural light, the light patterns and shadows will be more consistent than any other natural light. You can see how consistent the northern light is... if you have a room in your house that faces the north, notice that practically no direct sunlight enters through the windows... therefore, no changing shadows.
