Morality only really applies to interactions between people. It allows people to live close to each other in relative comfort. A hermit really doesn't need a morality, because he never intereracts with anybody.
So, being good does help you survive, but only in relation to your interactions with other people and only to the extent that you are able to negotiate and deal with other people, given their morality.
Other than that, crap happens to everybody. Being "good" helps, but only to a limited extent.
I wish your friend good luck. Illnesses can be difficult.

My prayers go out to her, and to you for comfort as well.
Bad things happen to good people all the time. It tests our character, builds our faith, teaches others. These bodies of ours are not really ours. We are not meant for this world. Whatever Ariel has, whether the bad flu or the "killer" flu, she will always have a tender place in your heart. And her life is and will be a testimony to many, either way. This has prompted you to get on a "religion and spirituality" forum. You have shared her life with others. You have revealed your own compassion for her.
Please know that God has her best interests at heart. Pray for her and do what you can to be in her life now and for however long she has. Even if that's the next 45 years! If God takes her, then so be it. Your heart will pop, it will explode. But God will hold you. You'll get angry and that's okay. But God will let you.
Keep her up in prayer. And we'll keep you up in prayer.

Because "bad" and "good" are simply statements of the relation between things, rather than qualities inherent in things. Ariel is a "good" person, in your opinion (and that of many others, I'm sure) because she is "thoughtful, friendly, funny and loving." Her flu is "bad" because it may be fatal. Her "good" qualities simply have no bearing on whether "bad" things like flu happen to her. The flu is not some kind of moral judgment.

While human society's moral and legal systems provide a certain amount of feedback by punishing and rewarding wrong and right, thats where the story ends.
What is humanity but like a speck in the universe, and one life fom anongst many (and viruses) on the planet. In the context of natural events things like plagues or earthquakes do not happen for a moral reason, but only in human societies, and then only part of the time.
While we might do our best to prevent disaster and distress, there is no guarantee.
I'm sorry to hear about your friend, and hope she get's well soon.

To me the term "good" preceding the word people is very subjective. Only God can truly see into the hearts and minds of men, women and children.
Plz understand this next comment isn't to be rude, but if your friend was a terrible person, hated by all, would she live forever? It just doesn't go that way for anyone.
My prayers for a speedy recovery for your friend.
